Guerrilla, the developers of the upcoming Horizon Forbidden West, went over many of the new skills and abilities the game has to offer in a recent post. Horizon Forbidden West, which is a sequel to the PlayStation's exclusive 2017 release Horizon Zero Dawn, is a highly anticipated open-world role-playing game centered around Aloy, a charismatic heroine on a quest to uncover and destroy the machines that threaten her world.

The original Horizon Zero Dawn, also an open-world RPG, featured a vast world with lush and diverse environments, a gripping storyline, dynamic combat, and an abundance of tools and weaponry to choose from while traversing the landscape. With Guerrilla no doubt looking to improve on many of these features in the upcoming sequel, they have been slowly dropping new bits of information like this one leading up to Horizon Forbidden West's scheduled to release in 2022. One other substantial bit of information was the gameplay trailer that was released back in June which no doubt had many players excited to get a sneak peek at what was to come.

A recent PlayStation article dives into discussing many of the new skills and abilities featured in Horizon Forbidden West. Among the new features, Aloy can free-climb on the rocky terrain, use new types of machines as mounts, swim underwater, and glide across the air using the Shieldwing. The Workbench feature, which is entirely new to the game, will give players the ability to upgrade their weapons and armor as they venture through the landscape.

The article goes on to explain how next-gen technology was a heavy focus when developing Horizon Forbidden WestTechnology such as the adaptive triggers on PlayStation's Dualsense controller was used extensively in the game. Horizon Forbidden West will also grant Aloy Valor Surge abilities which are powerful skills unlocked throughout the game used by expending accumulated Valor the player earns in battle.  Some of the other features teased are the all-new weapon variations, combat mechanics, and a completely redesigned and enhanced skill tree.

Horizon Forbidden West promises to be a fun and compelling sequel to its successful predecessor that looks to proudly showcase many of the PlayStation 5's impressive hardware capabilities.  That being said however there are still a huge amount of PlayStation fans out there who are unable to get their hands on the current generation console.  Although Guerrilla will also be releasing a version of Horizon Forbidden West for the PlayStation 4, many players may feel they are not getting nearly the full experience with so much development geared toward the hard-to-obtain next-gen.  With the new title not set to release until February 22nd, 2022, and still no end in sight to Sony's console shortage, it will be interesting to see if PS4 players will jump right into the new title with dated hardware, or opt to wait until they can get their hands on the newer Playstation 5.
