Netflix cancels adult animated sitcom Hoops after one season. Created by Ben Hoffman, the animated comedy series starred New Girl's Jake Johnson as Ben Hopkins, the hot-headed coach of the Lenwood High Colts. Ben's estranged wife Shannon (Natasha Leggero) is dating his best friend Ron (Ron Funches). Meanwhile, he lives in the shadow of his father Barry (voiced by Rob Riggle), a local basketball legend. The series saw Johnson reteaming with producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller behind 2018's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Variety reports Netflix has canceled Hoops after one season. The streamer, which debuted the series in August, weighed the show's cost versus its viewership and chose not to renew for season 2. The show received mostly negative reviews upon its release, currently holding a 14% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Hoops is the latest of Netflix shows to get canceled by the streamer after one season, following Away, I Am Not Okay With This, The Society, Tuca & Bertie, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, and others. Though Hoops is not returning for season 2, Netflix still carries several other adult animated shows, including Big Mouth, F is for Family and Disenchantment, and will soon be joined by upcoming shows Agent King and Entergalactic.

The show also featured Cleo King, A.D. Miles, Steve Berg, Sam Richardson, Nick Swardson, Eric Edelstein, Mary Holland, Gil Ozeri, and Max Greenfield. Considering the negative reviews, it's not a surprise that Netflix chose not to proceed with the series. Despite its comedic voice cast, the show was criticized for its lack of punchlines and a general direction. While it sometimes takes more than one season for a show to find its feet, Netflix decided not to wait around, especially when competing with other adult animated comedies on the streamer.
