Honkai: Star Rail is HoYoverse's next RPG gacha game that brings a new elemental system for players to learn. This system may have some properties that will relate to the ever-popular Genshin Impact, but with enough differences to make it feel unique. Honkai: Star Rail's turn-based strategy battle style also contributes to this, as the chaotic frenzy of Genshin Impact's system would feel overstimulating in a game such as this.

Honkai: Star Rail's elements do not work like other games where one element will always be better against a certain other one. Instead, enemies will have a set of elements they are weak to, and players will need to set a lineup that is ready to face that. This not only keeps gameplay fresh but also prioritizes flexible Star Rail team builds that can be ready to go at any moment.

Honkai Star Rail's Toughness & Weakness Explained

Honkai Star Rail's Trailblazer character holds his energy bat in combat.

Each enemy in Honkai: Star Rail has two bars above them, the white bar is their toughness, and the red bar is their health. Above the toughness bar will be the elements that the enemy is weak to and that the player will need to use. This is important, as while an enemy's toughness bar is still active, they will take reduced damage from all sources. In contrast, putting an enemy into a weakness break will allow the player to do full damage and push the enemy back in the turn order.

Honkai: Star Rail's toughness bar can be broken using any character's basic, skill, or ultimate ability. However, it is vital to space these out as the team has a limited amount of skill points they can use, and skill points can only be recharged by using basic attacks. Ultimates can be used anytime and only require the full charge gained by attacking or defeating enemies.

Honkai: Star Rail's element system may be the perfect thing for HoYoverse fans looking for a slower-paced or more strategic challenge. Though it loses the flashy and fast-paced action Genshin Impact introduced, it more than makes up for it with its clever turn-based changes. All of these leave Honkai: Star Rail with a fresh and exciting element and weakness system that only has room to grow as the game expands.
