The final season of Showtime’s Emmy-winning drama Homeland will reportedly feature yet another significant time jump, as the story is set to unfold in Afghanistan. The end of what was once the premium cabler’s biggest drama ever has been official for some time now, with star Claire Danes confirming as much in a number of interviews, and even series executive producer Alex Gansa has agreed the time has come to let the series reach a conclusion. What sort of conclusion the series has in mind is still the big question, but some new details about Homeland season 8 have begun to give shape to show’s final run.

The series’ quest to find a suitable ending to the story of Carrie Mathison will face a unique challenge, due primarily to the way in which season 7 ended. In addition to all the familiar political drama cooked up by the show’s fictional president, Elizabeth Keane (Elizabeth Marvel), the season concluded with Carrie being released from a seven-month stay in a Russian prison, without the benefit of the medication required to manage her mental illness. The final shot saw a disheveled and clearly agitated Carrie in the arms of Saul (Mandy Patinkin), with little indication of where the show would go from there.

As reported by TVLine, however, it now appears that Homeland is headed to Afghanistan for season 8, though the specifics of what the storyline will be are still under wraps. As noted by the report, the Homeland production is setting up shop in Morocco, which will double for Afghanistan, much like how South Africa did when the series was set there in season 4.

As such, this familiar-but-also-new setting will be something of a homecoming for Homeland, as season 4 was the show’s first full Brody-less season, proving that the series could exist without its other central character or the love story between him and Carrie that somehow became the focal point of the narrative. Since then, Homeland has gone to some interesting locales, most successfully, Berlin, in season 5, and then two seasons dealing with domestic issues in the U.S.

That time in the States has allowed the show to settle certain accounts on Carrie’s behalf; most notably, her daughter, Fran, and her strained relationships with everyone from Saul to her sister and brother-in-law. With yet another time jump set to take place in order to set the final season in motion, it will be interesting to find out what part those characters have to play in the last leg of Carrie’s story.
