Kevin McCallister is the perfect protagonist, and there are many iconic moments from the movie. Another thing that makes Home Alone so great is that it has many emotional moments. Some of these moments broke our hearts because they were really sad or extremely emotional in one way or another. Here are ten times that Home Alone broke our hearts.

KATE MCALLISTER BEATING HERSELF UP OVER BEING A BAD MOTHER

When Kate McCallister finally realizes that she left her son behind while on the plane to Paris, she understandably takes it rather hard. She can’t believe that of all the things to forget, she left one of her own children.

It’s clear that she’s beating herself up for being so frazzled and frantic that she doesn’t even see that Kevin isn't with them. As a parent, this would definitely be a horrifying moment, so it’s definitely pretty heart-wrenching.

THE LONELINESS OF THE PIGEON LADY

The Pigeon Lady sitting outside with her pigeons on Home Alone 2

In Home Alone 2, Kevin meets a woman who spends most of her time in Central Park feeding the pigeons. She is clearly lonely and talks about how she feels let down by people and the world.

Because of this, she keeps herself away from other people for the most part. This is definitely a sad story, and she is clearly a woman who is in a lot of pain but has a good heart. Kevin definitely sees this and wants to try to show her kindness.

WHEN KEVIN HAD TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO SAVE HIS HOME FROM THE BURGLARS

Given the fact that Kevin is only eight years old, he definitely shouldn’t have to be in charge of himself an entire house. And, on top of all that, he shouldn’t have to deal with the fact that robbers are trying to break into his home.

Clearly, he doesn’t quite know the correct channels to get adult help for what's going on, so he takes the responsibility onto himself. This is definitely a moment that’s heartbreaking because you just want to help Kevin.

WHEN KEVIN’S FAMILY WERE ALL JERKS TO HIM

Uncle Frank in Home Alone

At the start of Home Alone, Kevin is fed up with his family, and it’s easy to have sympathy for that. They are all rather rude to him, especially his older siblings.

They talk about how annoying and unlikable he is, and they just act overall like they can’t stand him. While Kevin can be a bit of a brat, he also feels like his family doesn’t listen to him at all, which is one of the most frustrating things that a kid can feel.

KEVIN DECORATING THE HOUSE FOR CHRISTMAS

When Kevin realizes that his family isn’t coming back anytime soon, he starts to try and uphold Christmas traditions on his own. He takes the responsibility of taking care of the house quite seriously. And, of course, like any kid at Christmas, he wants a Christmas tree.

He cuts one down from the yard and decorates it all by himself. Seeing him try his best to have a good holiday season while clearly being sad and missing his family definitely tugs at the heartstrings.

WHEN KEVIN GAVE THE PIGEON LADY THE TURTLE DOVES

Home Alone 2 Kevin and Pigeon Lady

The lady from Central Park who spends most of her time feeding pigeons becomes one of Kevin’s only friends and allies while he’s in New York City.

When Mr. Duncan from the toy store tells Kevin that turtle doves are symbolic of love and friendship, he takes this message to heart. He ends up giving on of them to her, and he keeps the other one. It’s a really emotional moment that’s sweet and also a little heartbreaking.

WHEN WE LEARNED THE BACKSTORY OF MARLEY BEING ESTRANGED FROM HIS FAMILY

Old Man Marley is someone that Kevin is scared of because of a scary story Buzz tells him, but when he meets him in the church, he learns that he’s very nice.

Marley tells him the story about his son and how they are estranged. It’s a pretty heartbreaking moment as it’s tragic that Marley hasn’t made up with his son and hasn’t been able to meet his granddaughter. Luckily, Kevin gives him some words of encouragement to give him courage.

KEVIN’S FAMILY PANICKING WHEN THEY REALIZE THEY LEFT HIM

When Kevin’s family all begins to realize they left him, they feel pretty bad about it, except Frank. Kevin’s parents are the most concerned, of course, but his siblings and even extended family are worried about him.

While they definitely messed up big time, it’s clear that they actually do care about and love him, and they want him to be safe.

WHEN KEVIN MEETS SANTA AND ASKS FOR HIS FAMILY BACK

In an effort to try and get his family back, Kevin goes to the person that most kids can’t stop thinking about around Christmas, Santa. While he says he knows that Santa isn’t the real one, he asks him to relay a message to the real deal.

He says that he doesn't want toys but instead just wants his family back. This is definitely a heart-touching moment and one of the most emotional ones of the movie.

WHEN KEVIN AND HIS MOM REUNIT

This moment isn’t heartbreaking in the normal sense of the word, but it’s definitely emotional. It is a moment that’s one of the most moving in the film, and it’s sad because of the fact that they clearly missed each other a lot.

Kevin is a little hurt at first by the fact that his mother had forgotten him, but he quickly becomes excited to see her. Seeing the mother and son reunite is definitely one of the more tear-jerking scenes.
