After players finish the first trial of Hogwarts Legacy, a quest opens up from the Caretaker Moon that eventually allows them to unlock locked doors through the use of the Alohomora spell. Players that take on "The Caretaker's Lunar Lament" mission are taught Alohomora from the Caretaker in order to steal two Demiguise Moon statues located in the faculty area during the dead of night. While higher levels of this magic for misfits are needed for more secure chests and pathways seen in the future, this new mechanic opens up the broader world of Hogwarts Legacy for players to explore at their whim.

At first, players are only able to unlock level one locked doors and chests with the Alohomora spell, but levels will increase by bringing back more Demiguise Moon statues to Caretaker Moon. Seven statues are necessary to break through level two locks, while thirteen statues given to Moon will give players access to level three locks. Since players are only able to find these Demiguise artifacts at night, they are recommended to change the time of day in the map menu when discovering the location of these objects around Hogwarts or other areas in Hogwarts Legacy.

Using Alohomora on a locked door or chest initiates a mini-game, where players are able to see a series of stable cogs on the right and middle. Simply adjusting red and green sparks under the player's control gets these cogs spinning, assuming both spark types are being manipulated through the twin sticks on a standard controller. Aligning both sparks so that each cog spins completes this small lockpicking challenge, opening up whatever object players were trying to bypass.

This incredibly useful spell should be a priority for players early on in Hogwarts Legacy's branching story, as a majority of new areas are barred by locked doors. While Alohomora does not become available through the aforementioned quest until the conclusion of the "Prepare For Your Search For the Final Keeper" main story mission, planning to meet Gladwin Moon as soon as possible gives players the stepping stone into a much wider world the game offers. Thankfully, the quest that gives Alohomora is required to progress further in the narrative, meaning players can't accidentally miss it as they're engrossed with other facets of the wizarding world.

There are 30 Demiguise Moon statues in Hogwarts Legacy in total, giving players ample opportunity to collect the desired 13 that would unlock level 3 doors with Alohomora. The abundant nature of these items encourages players to explore every region they come across, as sections are bound to have at least one of these artifacts lying around somewhere. Hogwarts Legacy's various spells have tons of functions, but unlocking locked doors with Alohomora remains perhaps the best tool for curious players looking to satiate their curiosity.
