Eventually, you will come across a door in Hogwarts Legacy that does not open using the Alohomora spell and instead requires you to solve an Arithmancy math puzzle. These doors often have animals corresponding with numbers that need to be rotated at the arch surrounding these doors. Unlocking these doors is recommended as it will let you collect loot and other valuable treasures not found in other chests.
Once you understand the basics of these puzzles, unlocking the rest of them should be a breeze. Make sure to use the Revelio spell to easily spot the silhouette of the door and the locks, as well as any hidden treasures behind them!
Hogwarts Legacy Puzzle Doors Explained
The locked doors that require solving a puzzle in Hogwarts Legacy are also known as Arithmancy Doors. These require students to do a little math to figure them out, hence why they've been given a portmanteau of Arithmetic. The math puzzle is actually quite simple once understood, and it's not necessary to see the solution for every door one comes across.
How To Solve Math Doors
The math doors actually have a guide to them found within Hogwarts Legacy. You can fast travel to the Divination Classroom Floo Flame Located in Hogwarts Legacy's Library Annex area, turn around, and head into the wooden rafters of the Central Hall. There is an Arithmancy Door at the end of the hall with a blackboard, surrounded by books. There is also a chest on a bench that contains a note showing the values of the symbols. It can be accessed in your inventory.
You must now use the value of the symbols to solve the equation on the door. For reference, have a look at the image below.
The total value of the big number in the center is equal to the sum of the outer number plus the symbol plus the unknown number indicated by '?' or '??'. The ? and ?? are the two locks that can be interacted with to rotate between the symbols associated with the door. Once the two locks show the correct symbol, the door is unlocked and can be interacted with now to be opened.
What's Behind The Math Puzzle Symbol Doors
After solving the math puzzle, you will typically see a chest or two behind these doors. Most offer a bit of gold in one and gear upgrades or collectible equipment cosmetics in another. There is also a chance that you will also find Hogwarts Legacy's Demiguise Statues found within the rooms of these special doors.
