The Sanderson sisters of Hocus Pocus are some of the most iconic Halloween witches out there. Their actresses did a great job of making them interesting, comedic, and memorable, so much so that the trio was reunited for a sequel nearly 30 years after the original.

The Sanderson sisters have undeniably become a cornerstone of most millennial and Gen-Z childhoods, so it comes as no surprise that many of their funniest lines are constantly quoted by fans throughout every Halloween season since the film's debut.

The Sanderson sisters are some of Disney’s most badass characters. Winifred, Mary, and Sarah may be more comfortable with the late 1600s, but they take full control in the present-day when they come back to life, thanks to a spell cast upon them 300-odd years ago. Throughout the original movie, the three sisters had some terrifyingly badass quotes that showed how strong, capable, and truly unhinged they could be.

"I'll Have Your Guts For Garters, Girl!"

Winifred Sanderson

Winnie Grabs Mary in an aggressive way in Hocus Pocus

As the sisters attempt to find the children, they come across a historic cemetery. With the gate shut, Winnie challenges her sisters to sniff out the troublesome children. Sarah climbs the gate and Mary cries out that she's unable to smell them. They've gotten too far away.

Winnie grabs her by the ear and immediately puts her in her place, uttering the infamous Medieval line. It seems Mary never does quite enough to impress her older sister, but who could ever impress Winifred Sanderson other than the devil himself?

"It's The Chocolate-Covered Finger Of A Man Named Clark!"

Mary Sanderson

This line was said by Mary after a man dressed as Satan gave them candy on Halloween night. All of Halloween is new to them since they've been dead for 300 years, so of course, they take the name of the candy very seriously.

The scene of them with a regular man dressed as Satan is one of the funniest scenes of Hocus Pocus and became an instant meme. They think he is the real Satan and call him master, thus weaving a terrible misunderstanding.

"I Put A Spell On You And Now You're Mine."

In one of the most iconic scenes from the film, the Sanderson Sisters break out into song at the community's Halloween party. The children try desperately to warn their parents not to listen, but the sound is simply too intoxicating. Are the sisters truly casting a spell? Or do they just like to perform for a good audience?

With Hocus Pocus 2 newly released, fans are hoping the Sanderson sisters sing even more. The origin of "I Put A Spell On You" goes back to Jalacy Hawkins with his powerful, soulful sound. Bette Midler perfectly channels his vocals into her rendition of the piece.

"I Killed You Once...

...I Shall Kill You Again, You Maggotty Malfeasance!"

Winifred Sanderson

Billy waking up from his grave in Hocus Pocus

Unable to capture the children due to the hallowed ground of the cemetery, Winnie calls an old friend for help. Billy Butcherson, the ex-boyfriend of Winnie, rises from the grave, albeit reluctantly. When Billy protests, she delivers this fine line, threatening to kill him again. Still relatively unamused, he goes along with her orders and follows the children.

Billy was one of the more likable characters on Hocus Pocus because of his hatred for Winifred. The relationship between these two characters plays out interestingly. Hundreds of years later, they still hold animosity toward each other. Even though Winnie killed Billy, he still has no time for her problems.

"This Is Terribly Uncomfortable."

Sarah Sanderson

The Sandersons about to be hung on Hocus Pocus

Sarah Sanderson was one of the stronger sisters and a fan favorite because she is a beautiful dope. She is all beauty with not much brain, so she adds humor to the thriller by saying silly things.

One such ridiculous quote is her saying "This is terribly uncomfortable" in response to having a noose around her neck. However, she may be saying it because she does not quite understand that she is about to be killed. On the other hand, she is a witch, so death might not even scare her.

"We Must Find The Book, Brew The Potion...

...And Suck The Life Out Of The Children Of Salem Before Sunrise."

Winifred Sanderson

Winnie's Book opening up in Hocus Pocus

When explaining her goal to her sisters, Winnie delivers a mouthful of a line that all fans know and love. Once the children steal the gruesome spellbook, the sisters can't remember the words or the ingredients needed for spellwork. This theft sets the course for the events of the film.

Winnie gets frustrated with her sisters as they seem to not understand the severity of the situation. She lets out a long-winded spiel about finding the book, brewing the potion, and sucking the lives out of the children all before sunrise. If the sisters fail in this task, they die. Knowing their lives were at stake, it didn't make sense that the Sanderson sisters didn't go after a more unsuspecting child instead of Dani, Max, or Allison.

"I Suggest We Form A Calming Circle."

Mary Sanderson

The three witches really do get stressed out by their task to stay alive and young, especially Winifred.

At one point, Mary suggests they have a calming circle to help Winifred de-stress. It was one of the more hilarious quotes from Hocus Pocus, especially since they do it too. It's funny since they are evil witches, but they need little therapeutic activities like a calming circle to say sane.

"I’ve Always Wanted A Child. And Now I Think I’ll Have One. On Toast!"

Winifred Sanderson

The Sanderson sisters laughing on Hocus Pocus

The Sanderson sisters sacrificed children for youth. While they don't actually eat them on toast, they do suck the lives from them. However, the joke does not fall flat as the sisters laugh at their own line. It proves that even as witches from the 1600s, they have a unique sense of humor.

It's interesting to think of Winifred as a mother and that she always wanted a child. Did she want a child of her own to be a mother, or did she want a child to suck the soul from?

"I Am Beautiful! Boys Will Love Me!"

Sarah Sanderson

Sarah Sanderson flying on her broom at night on Hocus Pocus

Sarah Sanderson was so charismatic that Hocus Pocus fans use Sarah as a muse for cosplay. After the Sanderson sisters suck the life from Emily Binx and kill her, they are excited to have their youth back.

Sarah says, "I am beautiful! Boys will love me!", which shows where her priorities are at now that she's young again. It's badass but creepy because she just sucked away a child's life force and is ready to party. She is also the one witch most interested in men, as she says other lines such as asking to hang one boy up and "play with him." Since she is a witch, that can mean a lot of things.

(Go To Hell!) "Oh, I’ve Been There, Thank You. I Found It Quite Lovely."

Winifred Sanderson

After Winifred's ex-boyfriend told her to "go to Hell," Winnie hilarious replied with this zinger. As mentioned, Winifred and Billy had a toxic relationship. When they were alive, Winnie found out Billy cheated on her with her own sister Sarah. Because of the betrayal, she killed him.

When she brought him back to life in 1993 in hopes of him helping her kill Dani, Max, and Allison, he told her to head back to Hell where she belongs. It was a badass and quick response.

”Don’t Get Your Knickers In A Twist! We’re Just Three Kindly Old Spinster Ladies."

Winifred Sanderson

With the Sanderson sisters being witches, they know that they’re not always welcome in either century. They weren’t welcomed in the 1600s because of their role in sucking the souls of children, and they were certainly not wanted in the present day.

Winifred tried her best to derail her enemies and ensure that she and her sisters were not witches but “three kindly old spinster ladies” instead. She could have gotten away with this if her dimwitted sister Sarah didn’t spoil their true intentions of stealing children.

"Amuck! Amuck! Amuck!"

Sarah Sanderson

The Sanderson sisters singing on stage on Hocus Pocus

It may come as no surprise that the Sanderson sisters were inspired by the Three Stooges. For a while, they are tricked into thinking the children are monsters on Halloween until they realize Halloween has now become a time when children dress in costumes and run amuck.

After Winifred explains this to her sisters, one of Sarah Sanderson's best quotes was when she gets all excited and starts chanting "Amuck! Amuck! Amuck!" while jumping up and down. Mary has to hit her to get her to stop and focus. When Sarah acted like a child, it only made Winifred look like the stronger sister.

"Oh Look. Another Glorious Morning. Makes Me Sick!"

Winifred Sanderson

Winifred waking up and looking out the window on Hocus Pocus

Another great line by Winifred, this is such a well-loved line since it is just so cartoonish-ly cynical and evil.

Like Winifred, a lot of folks are not morning people, so they may feel this quote on a personal level. Another aspect that made this line so great is that it is one of the first quotes fans hear from Winifred. It is an excellent induction of her character as both funny and evil.

“Sisters, Satan has married Medusa”

Mary Sanderson

Satan and his wife arguing in Hocus Pocus

Mary Sanderson wasn’t the strongest sister. Because of the way Winifred treated her, fans felt bad for Mary in Hocus Pocus. Regardless of her limiting powers, Mary was useful in her own way and some hilarious lines.

On Halloween night, the man they assumed was Satan’s wife entered the room with a bathrobe and curlers in her hair. Because of the curlers, Mary assumed Satan “married Medusa,” which was a hilariously underrated quote but badass at the same time because she had no fear in poking fun at “Medusa.”

"I Am Calm!"

Winifred Sanderson

One thing about Winifred is that she is not skilled at remaining calm. After all, the stakes are rather high for the witches. If they do not succeed in their mission by a certain time, they will be turned to stone.

Throughout the film, Winifred is yelling a lot of her lines due to the stress she is under. Her sisters try to calm her, sometimes succeeding and other times not. There is one point where Winifred is told to calm down to which she outs, "I AM CALM!" Obviously, due to how the quote was delivered though, she is anything but calm.

(What Is This Place?) "It's a Prison For Children."

Winifred Sanderson

A lot of the funny moments of the film are all about the Sanderson sisters interpreting modern society since they have time traveled from the 1600s. As they are exploring, they come upon a high school. When the younger sisters ask what the building is, Winifred tells them "It's a prison for children."

To a lot of people, not just children, that is the truth that makes this such a great line. Schools have changed a ton since the 1600s though, so kudos to Winifred for figuring it all out so fast.
