Directed by Kenny Ortega, Hocus Pocus starred Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy as the Sanderson sisters, three witches who are burned at the stake in 17th century Salem. Decades later, a teenager called Max (Omri Katz) moves to Salem and ends up at the witches' old home, where he lights the Black Flame Candle and accidentally brings the Sandersons back from the dead. Max, his little sister Dani (Thora Birch) and local girl Allison (Vinessa Shaw) team up with a talking cat to try and stop the witches before they can consume the life forces of every child in town.
Now, a Hocus Pocus 2 is in development that will have a new cast and is expected to release on Freeform (or possibly on Disney's new streaming service, Disney Plus). Here's every update you need to know.
Hocus Pocus 2 Is A TV Movie
Speaking in 2017, original screenwriter Mick Garris said he had heard rumors of Hocus Pocus 2 moving ahead as a TV movie, with a script already in development. Shortly afterwards it was confirmed that a Hocus Pocus TV movie was in the works at Disney Channel for release on Freeform, and that it would be a reboot rather than a direct sequel. David Kirschner, executive producer of the original film, is producing Hocus Pocus 2, and the script is being penned by Scarlett Lacey (My Sweet Audrina).
Hocus Pocus 2 Has A New Cast
Hocus Pocus director Kenny Ortega will not be involved in the making of Hocus Pocus 2, and the movie will likewise feature an entirely new cast. This is somewhat understandable given that even the original movie's youngest star, Thora Birch, is now in her mid-30s, so a new cast of kids is in order. Original star Bette Midler was not impressed with the idea of a remake, saying, "I know it’s cheap. It’s going to be cheap!" and adding "My character is very, very broad and I don’t know who they’re going to find to play that." Garris has also expressed skepticism at the idea of replacing the original Sanderson sisters, saying, "I think it would be much more fun to bring the ladies back. They’re all still vital and in their prime." Doug Jones, who played zombie character Billy Butcherson, has said that he would "love" to reprise his role.
When Will Hocus Pocus 2 Release?
While fans of the original may be eager to see Hocus Pocus 2, development has been slow-going. Since the project was first announced back in 2017 there haven't been any real updates and it's unclear what the current status of the movie is. However, with Disney launching streaming service Disney Plus this year and looking to pour hundreds of millions of dollars into generating new original content for it, it's possible that Hocus Pocus 2 will be revived for online release rather than as a traditional TV movie. If that happens, it could arrive as early as 2020.
