Hocus Pocus 2 director Anne Fletcher addresses the possibility of more Hocus Pocus sequels with a promising statement. The original Hocus Pocus, released in 1993, is beloved for its family-friendly celebration of Halloween, and this year's sequel will see the return of the child-hungry Sanderson sisters. Hocus Pocus 2 will release on Disney Plus September 30, just in time for the witches to wreak havoc during Halloween season.
Hocus Pocus 2 will continue the Sanderson legend with new kids bringing them back to life in modern-day Salem, as well as more information on the sisters' mysterious backstory. Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy will once again play the beloved trio, and Doug Jones will also return as Billy Butcherson. The sequel movie doesn’t seem to be adapting the sequel book released in 2018, which followed Max and Allison’s daughter, but instead follows three young women as they awaken the Sanderson sisters with the Black Flame Candle once more.
In an interview with SFX Magazine, Fletcher gives a promising update on future Hocus Pocus sequels, stating that Hocus Pocus 2 leaves the door wide open. While it’s still up to Disney to move forward with more installments, Fletcher seems to have ended Hocus Pocus 2 with a very clear potential for future awakenings of the Sanderson sisters. I have definitely kept it wide open for any sequel. Now it’s really up to them if they want to do it. I can’t say anything other than yes, it is left open. Will they do it? I don’t know, they haven’t even talked about it, that I can be honest with you.

While Fletcher has said Hocus Pocus 2 will be very different from the original, it is still an ode to the joy of the original Hocus Pocus. A large part of Hocus Pocus’ nostalgia comes from its timeless characters and light humor and scares, which Fletcher believes lend themselves to even more sequels. She makes it clear that, while no deals have confirmed future Hocus Pocus sequels, she has made it easy to continue the franchise with more stories of the Sanderson sisters.
Although Hocus Pocus 2 hasn’t even been released yet, the prospect of more sequels is certainly exciting, especially for viewers who grew up with Hocus Pocus as a Halloween must-watch. The success of Hocus Pocus 2 will likely determine the future of more sequels, or even a Hocus Pocus prequel, but if the sequel matches the sentimentality of the original, it should see commercial success. For now, the promise of possible sequels should be taken lightly, until audiences see how well the movie does and how it ends.
