Set photos from Disney's upcoming Hocus Pocus 2 show preparation for a big Salem village fire scene. A recent video from the Hocus Pocus 2 set gave a first look at the constructed village set to appear in the movie. Though filming is taking place in Rhode Island, the constructed set is believed to be part of flashbacks made to resemble 1600's Salem, Massachusetts.

Although not much is known about the upcoming Disney sequel, the original film's infamous witches are all set to reprise their roles. This ensemble includes Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy as the Sanderson sisters. Recent Hocus Pocus 2 set photos hint at new flashback scenes set in a Salem village during the 1600s. Made to resemble buildings from the era, the most famous of the structures includes a replica of the real Salem's family home-turned museum, The Witch House. This famous Salem location is said to be the only remaining structure in the city that holds direct ties to the Salem Witch Trials. How the building will factor into the finished movie is not yet known at this time. However, it seems there may be a reason the production constructed a replica instead of filming at the actual location.

The Providence Journal reports that recent set photos from Hocus Pocus 2 show the crew preparing the Salem-themed village for a big fire scene. The village itself consists of nine wood-framed structures, most of which are missing one or more sides since only the sides set to appear on screen are fully constructed. While the crew prepares the area for the fire scene, it seems they won't actually light any of the structures on fire, as Taylor Ryan, an air quality specialist from the state's Department of Environment Management, said in the following statement:

"They are not actually lighting the structure on fire. They are using 'fire beams' fueled by natural gas so it looks like the building is on fire from the camera, but nothing will be burnt down."

Although the set won't actually burn to the ground, the crew is still preparing the area for safety measures. The Disney film will have a fire engine and utility vehicle on-site during the filming. The set will also house two 500-gallon water tanks in the event of an emergency. The production's original open burning permit application was set to burn down the village; however, it seems they changed their minds. Ryan learned of the new plans when she inspected the site last Tuesday. Ryan followed up her inspection, saying Disney's decision to not actually burn down the village is "better from [an] environmental perspective," as well as it's better for the production since they "can do multiple takes on the scene."

How the big Salem village fire scene will factor into the plotline of Hocus Pocus 2 is not known at this time. It is also not currently known how many flashbacks of the 1600's Salem village will make the final cut. However, given that the Sanderson sisters are executed in the opening scene in the original film, perhaps the village's fire is their revenge on those that killed them.
