Hobbs & Shaw 2 Confirmed To Be In Development

New Hobbs & Shaw 2 Details Revealed By Dwayne Johnson

According to Dwayne Johnson, Hobbs & Shaw 2 is being actively developed. Last year's Hobbs & Shaw spinoff followed Johnson and Jason Statham's Fast & Furious characters as they begrudgingly join forces to prevent a terrorist organization from getting their hands on a supervirus. The film didn't fly as high as recent Fast & Furious installments (either critically or commercially), but was still well-received and became a box office hit thanks to the global market. It was also clearly designed to serve as a launchpad for additional spinoffs, on top of (obviously) a straightforward sequel.

Longtime Fast & Furious writer Chris Morgan (who also wrote Hobbs & Shaw) previously confirmed the plan is to bring back the spinoff's mystery villain - the director of the shadowy Eteon organization - in the future, but there hasn't been much discussion of what to expect from Hobbs & Shaw 2 beyond that. Partly, that's because Johnson has been busy as ever filming and/or promoting his many other projects since the first Hobbs & Shaw hit theaters. But with Hollywood currently shut down because of the coronavirus, The Rock has taken some time to provide an update on the sequel.

Over the weekend, Johnson offered a quick update on Hobbs & Shaw 2 during an Instagram Live Q&A. The actor confirmed "We are developing now the next film, the next [Hobbs & Shaw] movie, and I'm pretty excited about it." He went on to say he and the rest of the Hobbs & Shaw team "Just gotta figure out the creative right now, and the direction we’re going to go" before thanking fans around the world for making the first movie "a huge success."

Jason Statham as Shaw and Dwayne The Rock Johnson as Hobbs

Story-wise, Hobbs & Shaw left a number of plot threads dangling for the sequel to pick up, including Hobbs rekindling ties with his brother Jonah (Cliff Curtis) and the rest of his family. It also set the stage for actors like Ryan Reynolds and Kevin Hart to play bigger roles alongside Johnson and Statham in the sequel, following their cameos in the first movie (which were kept under-wraps ahead of its release). Key characters like Vanessa Kirby's Hattie Shaw and Eiza González's Madam M were similarly positioned to play equally large or larger roles in Hobbs & Shaw 2, following their introduction to the Fast & Furious universe. Really, save for Eteon's Director, it seems the Hobbs & Shaw sequel already has a healthy chunk of its cast all lined up for more.

Between its supervirus plot device and Idris Elba's role as the cyber-genetically enhanced Eteon agent Brixton, Hobbs & Shaw succeeded in taking the Fast & Furious franchise further into sci-fi territory than the mainline entries before it. It would probably be smart to continue developing things in that direction with Hobbs & Shaw 2, as a way of further distinguishing the spinoff series from the central Fast & Furious movies (which will return with F9 in 2021). At the same time, the first Hobbs & Shaw worked best when it really focused in on its themes about family, so that's another thing for the sequel to carry over. All in all, the pieces are there for Hobbs & Shaw 2 to turn out well - now, Johnson and his crew just have to figure out how to fit them together.
