Dwayne Johnson reveals the unexpected Hobbs & Shaw 2 story pitch he brought to Universal Pictures and what it will take to get the sequel made. The 2019 action film was the first spin-off of the Fast & Furious franchise and centered on Johnson and Jason Statham's titular characters as they find themselves forced to work together to protect Shaw's MI6 agent sister from a cybernetically-enhanced terrorist after a deadly virus she is carrying. Alongside Johnson and Statham, the cast for Hobbs & Shaw included Idris Elba, Vanessa Kirby, Eiza González, Cliff Curtis, Helen Mirren and Ryan Reynolds.

Hobbs & Shaw proved to be a critical and commercial hit, with reviews praising the comedic chemistry between Johnson and Statham and the large-scale action sequences and having brought in over $760 million at the box office against its $200 million budget. Shortly after its release, producer Hiram Garcia teased the possibility of a sequel as all involved entered talks to return while franchise writer Chris Morgan and director David Leitch discussed the story possibilities for a follow-up. While Johnson confirmed last year that a sequel was properly in the works with Morgan signing on to once again write, the ever-busy star has offered an intriguing update for the film.

In anticipation of the release of his Netflix blockbuster Red Notice, Johnson spoke with Sirius XM's The Jess Cagle Show about the possibility of Hobbs & Shaw 2. Johnson expressed the delay for the film, along with other projects, is currently a matter of scheduling but revealed he did bring his own pitch to Universal and Morgan for the sequel that the duo loved. See what Johnson shared below:

“So when it comes to Hobbs and Shaw, which we loved and loved making that movie, there’s an idea that I had that I called Donna Langley, called our writer Chris Morgan, our producer Hiram Garcia. And I said, ‘I have this idea and this direction for Hobbs.’ And I pitched it and they all loved it. It would be the antithesis of what Fast and Furious movies generally are in that they continue to go on and go on and go on, in this case, I still want to do the quintessential Hobbs movie. That, without giving it away, you watch a man walk off into the sunset.

Donna loved it and they’ve been wonderful partners at Universal, but I said, ’You know, we have an opportunity here, I think to go against the grain and let’s disrupt things a little bit, and let’s create a movie within the Fast and Furious world that is unexpected, that I think people will go, ‘Oh man, like, wow, thank you for that.’ So we’ll see.

Honestly it is. ‘When do you want to make it?’ Or ‘when can you make it?’ I mean, that's Donna’s words to me is, ‘When can you make it?’ What I’m telling you guys is I reached a point in my career where it now becomes just a matter of timing."

Luke Hobbs looking serious in Hobbs & Shaw

Though Johnson may have remained tight-lipped on the exact details of his Hobbs & Shaw story pitch, his tease of "a man walk off into the sunset" and going against the grain of the ongoing Fast & Furious movies seemingly indicates his idea is to bring his time to a proper close in the franchise. Aside from the hit spin-off, Johnson has infamously separated himself from the action series since production of The Fate of the Furious in which he and co-star Vin Diesel had a clashing of heads and subsequently saw his character not return in the mainline sequels. Johnson has also confirmed he will not be in Fast & Furious 10 or 11, the planned final installments in the mothership franchise.

If Johnson's Hobbs & Shaw 2 story pitch does indeed bring his time to a close in the series, it would be a rare sense of closure audiences have yet to receive for any Fast & Furious characters, namely after F9: The Fast Saga elected to bring back Jordan Brewster's Mia and hinted at the return of Paul Walker's Brian, despite the latter's passing and wrapping of their story in Furious 7. With Johnson also keeping his schedule full with the long-awaited DC Extended Universe film Black Adam and sequels to Jungle CruiseJumanji and San Andreas, his departure from the Fast & Furious franchise would open the door for him to take on other potential franchises. As Universal currently focuses on concluding the mainline films, only time will tell what the future may hold for Hobbs & Shaw 2.
