Kelly McCormick, a producer on Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, gives a disappointing update on the status of the sequel. Hobbs & Shaw is a spinoff of the Fast & Furious franchise, starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham as their Fast characters Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw, respectively. The movie was released in 2019, with audiences enjoying the adversarial dynamic between Johnson and Statham's characters and praising the movie's over-the-top set pieces, which have become a main feature of the Fast & Furious universe over the years. Hobbs & Shaw went on to gross $760 million worldwide.

We would love to, there's no conversations at this time. I do feel like there were a lot of seeds planted to try to create a spinoff in a way that included a Kevin Hart and a Ryan Reynolds and sort of all that kind of stuff. And that was intentional, but not necessarily because we had plans in mind, just because it would be fun to have different players for them to play with, if anybody or we wanted to go for it in a different way. So, you know, I don't know, I mean Dwayne's a really busy guy and you know, he would be the one to motivate all of that. So, you know, we're ready if he wants to and until then he's just dominating so all power to him.
Will Dwayne Johnson Ever Return To The Fast & Furious Franchise?
While Johnson's return for a Hobbs & Shaw sequel appears to be just a matter of timing for the actor, a return to the main Fast & Furious franchise seems to be out of the question. It would take an extremely large amount of convincing to get Johnson to agree to a reunion with Fast & Furious leading man Vin Diesel. Johnson and Diesel had a public fallout, which led to the former WWE superstar leaving the Fast & Furious franchise and spearheading the creation of the Hobbs & Shaw spinoff.
Ever since Johnson called unnamed members of the Fast & Furious cast "candy asses" in a now-deleted Instagram post, the situation has remained unchanged. Fans don't know exactly what happened on the set of The Fate of the Furious, but Johnson's post and Diesel's behavior towards the mere mention of Johnson after the fact have given the impression that whatever might've happened between the two stars won't be repaired in time for Johnson's Hobbs to reunite with the Fast & Furious family in the franchise's final two movies. The Johnson and Diesel feud has apparently secluded Hobbs' participation in the franchise to spinoffs, which might not be such a bad thing for the character in the end.
What Could Happen In A Hobbs & Shaw Sequel?
Hobbs & Shaw set up enough plot lines and characters to fill a potential sequel. The first movie saw the lawful Hobbs join forces with the criminal Shaw in order to stop Brixton Lore (Idris Elba), a cybernetically enhanced villain that wanted to release the deadly "Snowflake" virus on the world for the Eteon corporation. Hobbs & Shaw introduced two new characters who could play a big role the Fast & Furious universe. First up is Ryan Reynolds, who appeared as Locke, a CIA agent who is an old friend of Hobbs'. Meanwhile, Kevin Hart portrayed Air Marshal Dinkley. The first movie ended without revealing who was Eteon's unseen director, with the character set up to be the main villain of the sequel, as Hobbs and Shaw vow to find him. The search for the director and Reynolds' character finding an even deadlier virus in the movie's post credits scene will surely play a large role in the Hobbs & Shaw sequel, whenever it might happen.
