The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard release date moves up two months. 2017's The Hitman's Bodyguard teamed Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson for an action-comedy about the unlikely pairing between a security expert and the international assassin he is hired to protect. The movie was a modest hit with $176 million taken at the box office on a budget of between $30 and $69 million. A sequel entitled The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard was set for release in 2020 but like so many movies was pushed back due to COVID.

Now as COVID vaccinations continue and the world is beginning to open back up, movie studios are moving release dates up instead of pushing them back. Lionsgate has joined this rush to fill theaters earlier than expected by moving up The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard to June 16, 2021. The film had been slated to release in August before the move. The shift prevents a glut of August Reynolds releases, as the actor's Free Guy is set to arrive on August 13.

The new June 16 release date for The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard should give it a chance to debut well at the box office as there are no other major theatrical releases planned for that week. In addition to a returning Reynolds and Jackson, the movie also stars Salma Hayek, Frank Grillo, Antonio Banderas, Morgan Freeman and Richard E. Grant.

The synopsis for The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard reads, "In the movie, Bryce – still unlicensed and under scrutiny – is forced into action by Darius and his wife, the infamous international con artist Sonia. As Bryce is driven over the edge by his two most dangerous protectees, the trio get in over their heads in a global plot and soon find that they are all that stand between Europe and a vengeful and powerful madman (Antonio Banderas).  Joining in the fun and deadly mayhem is Morgan Freeman as… well, you’ll have to see."
