The series marks Stamp's first TV appearance since Smallville, which ended in 2011. He already has some experience in the His Dark Materials world, as he was previously featured in a BBC Radio 4 dramatization of the book trilogy. so he's sure to be an excellent addition to the cast. Season 2 will adapt The Subtle Knife, the second novel of Pullman's trilogy, and will pick up after the events of season 1, which followed the adventures of Lyra Belacqua, played by Dafne Keen.

The His Dark Materials season 1 finale saw Lyra follow Lord Asriel, played by James McAvoy, into a new world. In season 2, Lyra finds herself in the mysterious Cittagazze where she meets Will, played by Amir Wilson, the boy from the human world in season 1 who crossed into the same dimension as Lyra. The series also stars Ruth Wilson as Mrs. Coulter and Lin-Manuel Miranda as Lee Scoresby. Andrew Scott was previously announced as joining the season 2 cast as Colonel John Parry, Will's father.
