Because he's such a dynamic character, it was easy to ignore how problematic Barney was in How I Met Your MotherBut streaming services have made rewatching the show easy, and as time goes on, viewers are starting to take notice of Barney's offensive behavior.

His lines were always meant to be funny, but many of them are just obnoxious and hateful. In fact, there are several things about Barney that would never fly today, and the foul way he talks to and about women stands out above all of them.

"Unless It's An Issue Of Health, National Security, Or He's About To Get Up On A Fattie."

Unfortunately, fat-shaming is not something that's uncommon in How I Met Your Mother. All of the characters have made jokes at the expense of other people, but Barney is the worst offender. He goes out of his way to criticize women he thinks are too heavy and acts like he's superior to them.

In this particular quote, he made the gang promise not to interfere in his personal life again, with just a few exceptions. "Getting up on a fattie," was one of them, and it was disgusting that his friends even repeated after him.

"A Girl Is Allowed To Be Crazy As Long As She Is Equally Hot."

Barney's "crazy/hot scale," is on another level of horrible. A graph even pops up in the show so Barney can explain exactly how it works. The quote says it all, and Barney believes that a person's hotness level can outweigh how crazy he believes they are.

No one deserves to be objectified the way Barney objectifies them, and he's not the big shot he tries to portray himself as. Not to mention, calling a woman crazy is not only demeaning but misogynistic. Barney never applies these rules to men, and he judges a woman's mental stability based on his own personal hierarchy. His "crazy/hot scale" is severely off-balance.

"At One Point, I'm Pretty Sure I Sold A Woman. I Didn't Speak The Language, But I Shook A Guy's Hand, He Gave Me The Keys To A Mercedes, And I Left Her There."

This quote is something that actually came out of Barney's mouth while he had a straight face. It's one of the many times the main characters should probably have gone to jail in How I Met Your Mother and it establishes just how bad Barney really is.

His pick-up tactics and misogynistic behavior were bad enough, but here, he basically admits to playing a part in the human trafficking industry. Even if the woman ended up being okay, Barney was well aware of what he was doing when he left her with a stranger in exchange for a car.

"Gonna Take Advantage Of Dumb, Drunk Girls."

This line is pretty straightforward and it doesn't require an explanation on why it's wrong. What Barney is intending to do is crossing a line, not to mention illegal. Women can't give consent when they're drunk, which is exactly why Barny wants them intoxicated.

Technically, this is a lyric in Ted and Barney's "Puzzles" theme song, but it was clearly ad-libbed by Barney. Ted shuts him down with his own ad-libbed lyrics, but taking advantage of drunk women is something that Barney has also admitted to doing in the past.

"There's No Time To Explain How I Got Bit There, I Just Need Someone To Suck The Poison Out!"

It's likely that no one would actually believe Barney here, as it's clear what he's trying to do with this line. However, the fact that he would even want to trick a woman into performing a sexual act on him under false pretenses is horrific.

As displayed throughout the series in many quotes similar to this one, consent is not something that Barney feels is necessary. He will do everything and anything to get a woman into bed, no matter how immoral or illegal it might be.

"The Flashing Red Light Means It's Off."

In most places, it is illegal to film someone during sex without their consent. It's considered voyeurism and a serious offense. But Barney doesn't just tape women without them knowing, he flat out lies about it and tells them the videocamera is off.

To make matters worse, Barney has shown these videos to the gang with no remorse for his actions. It's also questionable why Barney's friends allow him to get away with these acts and treat them as nothing more than an annoyance.

"The Only Reason To Wait A Month For Sex Is If The Girl Is 17 Years 11 Months Old."

Barney's actions are borderline predatory, and his statement to Ted confirmed it. He clearly doesn't have a problem with going after girls who are barely legal, as he was interested in a group of 18-year-olds in Ted's class.

To make things worse, Ted goes to visit Barney and sees one of his students sitting in his office. It's never explicitly stated that Barney's made a move on a minor, but given what he said, the law seems to be the only thing that's holding him back.

"Who Knew Being In A Committed Heterosexual Relationship Could Make A Guy So Gay?"

Barney is the epitome of toxic masculinity. He and the rest of the characters often make fun of Ted for enjoying things that they find feminine. Robin's boyfriend even thought Ted was gay just because he likes calligraphy and records Project Runway.

In this particular instant, Barney was addressing Marshall's relationship with Lily. Barney also said this line like it was an insult, which is offensive in itself.

"Oh, Thank You, Marshall!"

In a scene that's usually brushed under the rug, Barney tries to cheat on Robin the night of his bachelor party. He automatically assumes that sleeping with Lily was the request Marshall was granting him, and he didn't even hesitate to undo his belt and rush towards her.

It was also odd that all of Robin's best friends saw it happen and played it off as Barney just being Barney. The worst part of it all is that Barney thanks Marshall as if Lily is his property. But Barney did admit to selling a woman, so, sadly, it wasn't at all surprising.

"Tonight's The Night I Finally Do It. Tonight, I Pick Up A Lesbian."

Barney tries to pick up a lesbian in How I Met Your Mother.

Barney dressing up as what he thinks is a lesbian woman to try and sleep with her is one of many jokes in HIMYM that have already aged poorly. His outfit, voice, and demeanor, were all based on stereotypes, making this entire scene a jab at the LGBTQ+ community.

Barney's actions are wrong on multiple levels, and it even poses the question of whether or not there was consent when his plan succeeded. He was posing as someone he wasn't in order to get the woman to sleep with him, and his deception shouldn't be played off as a joke.
