Lizzie McGuire star Hilary Duff has officially weighed in on the controversy surrounding the reboot, asking Disney to move the show from Disney+ to Hulu. The original series became a Disney Channel classic after airing in the early 2000s. It starred Duff as the title character, following her adventures with her friends, Gordo and Miranda, as they navigated middle school. The series also focused on her relationship with her family, especially her little brother, Matt. Lizzie McGuire set itself apart from other Disney Channel shows with a cartoon version of Lizzie who would add commentary and show viewers what the character was thinking.

In the midst of a successful two-season run that lasted three years, the show released a feature film, The Lizzie McGuire Movie. In it, Lizzie and her classmates travel to Rome for a school trip, where she's mistaken for an Italian pop star. Though the movie marks the chronological end of the story, it's not the last time fans saw Lizzie and co., as the film was released well before the series finale. At the time, Disney was interested in continuing Lizzie McGuire, likely on the Disney-owned ABC, however, an agreement with Duff never came to fruition.

Luckily, last summer, Disney announced a revival of the series for Disney+, with several original cast members, including Duff, returning. The show filmed two episodes before Lizzie McGuire's original creator, Terri Minsky, was fired. Earlier this week, Duff hinted on Instagram that the show may not have been family-friendly enough for Disney+'s liking. Minsky echoed that sentiment in an interview, explaining that she hoped the show would be moved to the Disney-owned Hulu. Now, Duff has elaborated on her thoughts about the revival, asking that the show be moved to Hulu so that it doesn't have "to live under the ceiling of a PG rating." Revivals and reboots have become a TV staple over the last few years. In fact, Lizzie McGuire won't even be the first revival of a Disney Channel classic, as a spinoff/revival of That's So Raven, called Raven's Home, has been airing since 2017. However, that show airs on the Disney Channel like the original did, making the content fairly similar. The Lizzie McGuire revival would be a standout in that way if it were to air on Hulu with more realistic and adult content, as Duff hopes.

As of now, it's unknown if fans will ever see the first two episodes of the revival or when the series may begin production again. Duff's comments seem to suggest that she isn't on board with Disney+'s proposed take on Lizzie McGuire, which could mean the series never sees the light of day. Hopefully, all parties involved will be able to come to an agreement, whether than means airing on Disney+ or Hulu, giving fans a chance to see what Lizzie McGuire is up to now.
