Vinland Saga's popularity stems from the brutal subject matter that allows the mangaka a cornucopia of opportunities to demonstrate his exceptional artistic skills through gruesome and vividly detailed battle scenes. Slam Dunk tells of Hanamichi's reformation, his friendship with Haruko, and his gradual acceptance of his new position on the basketball team. It earns major points with fans for covering a sport that's relatively underrepresented in the medium.

Fullmetal Alchemists' world, based around the subject of Alchemy, gives the world full of monsters and creatures a grounded feeling by having it incorporate scientific theories and laws. Its scientific basis along with interesting fights and excellent comedy has allowed it to reach a large demographic and be enjoyed by all.

Monster, created by Naoki Urasawa, focuses on the life of a Japanese Neurosurgeon and the repercussions he faces when he is torn between saving the life of a young boy or the Mayor. His choice to save the boy and let the mayor die led to his disgrace in the medical field, leaving him to pick up the pieces of his tarnished career.

Monster is well known for its dark gritty imagery and harsh portrayal of how a surgeon can go from a revered doctor to a complete disgrace with a single choice. Along with the murder mystery aesthetic present throughout the series, this manga has famously become one of the most grounded and darkest series ever written.

Vagabond

Vagabond is a fictitious manga re-telling the life and history of famed samurai Musashi Miyamoto. In this retelling, Shinmen Takezou is unjustly blamed for the death of his best friend Matahachi Honiden who died in battle at the hands of the Tokugawa. He was hanged for his "crimes," though a passing monk removed him from the tree before his death, and gave him the name Musashi Miyamoto telling him to make a new life for himself.

Vagabond won critical acclaim for both its exceptional writing and next-level art. While a fictitious retelling, the level of detail and characterization the characters exude bring both them and the world around them to life. With the addition of its realistic, and gritty art style, Takehiko Inoue expertly materializes its setting of feudal Japan.

One Piece
