High School Musical: The Musical: The Series season 3 will premiere on Disney+ in 2022. A spinoff from the movie franchise of the same name, the High School Musical series was developed by Tim Federle and debuted in 2019. In its first season, the students at the fictionalized East High School worked on staging a production of the first High School Musical movie. For its second outing, which concluded in July of this year, the show branched out in a way that bolstered its storytelling. Rather than recreate the sequel of the namesake franchise, HSMTMTS season 2 saw East High focus on perfecting their version of Beauty and the Beast with the hopes of defeating their North High rivals.
A renewal of the High School Musical series was announced back in September and now, as part of Disney+ Day, it’s revealed that HSMTMTS season 3 will debut in 2022. An exact date was not specified. The announcement came with a snowflake emoji, which some fans took as a sign that the story might center around a Frozen musical. Check out the tweet, via Disney+, below:

Although not much yet is known about what HSMTMTS season 3 will consist of, it was reported that production would relocate from Salt Lake City to Los Angeles and that at least part of the season will unfold during summer break. The story will follow the HSMTMTS characters as they spend some time at a sleepaway camp. The show’s ensemble cast, including Joshua Bassett, Matt Cornett, Sofia Wylie, and Julia Lester, are expected to return.
Questions do remain, however, about the status of Olivia Rodrigo who plays Nini Roberts on the Disney+ series. Rodrigo has become a very successful artist in her own right and, in the past, she’s remarked on the difficulties of balancing her acting commitments with her music career. The finale of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series season 2 does leave the door open for Rodrigo to move from a regular cast member to a recurring guest.
