Joshua Bassett has unfollowed his co-star, Olivia Rodrigo, on Instagram ahead of filming on High School Musical: The Musical: The Series season 3. High School Musical: The Series premiered on Disney+ on November 8, 2019, and is a spin-off of the popular Disney Channel original movie, High School Musical. The series follows East High School's drama club on its journey to staging High School Musical: The Musical. Starring Rodrigo, Bassett, Matt Cornett, Sofia Wylie, and Larry Saperstein, the series explores the friendships, relationships, struggles, and triumphs that come with being part of a high school drama club.

Filming for HSMTMTS season 3 is set to begin sometime this month. The series will see much of the original cast reprising their roles, including Rodrigo, who recently confirmed her return despite rumors that she would not be returning. News of Bassett and Rodrigo's upcoming reunion on the set of season 3 sparked curiosity after the two expressed some animosity towards one another. While never confirmed by either star, fans have largely speculated that the two were involved in a messy love triangle that inspired Rodrigo's song "Drivers License." Bassett confirmed the two haven't talked in a while, and he recently gave another hint of trouble between the two.

As reported by Pop Crave, Bassett appears to have unfollowed Rodrigo on Instagram shortly before High School Musical: The Series begins filming. Viewers were quick to react to the observation, with some criticizing Bassett for the action while others believed the gesture to be insignificant. It isn't uncommon for individuals to unfollow each other on social media, but the unfollowing combined with the rumors surrounding the two, raises curiosity about season 3 and if filming may be a little awkward for the two.

Much has changed for both Bassett and Rodrigo since the beginning of HSMTMTS. Rodrigo has found much success in her singing career, shooting to fame after the release of her album Sour. Her debut single "Drivers License" topped the charts for weeks and sparked much interest for High School Musical: The Series fans. A rumor has persisted that the song is about Rodrigo and co-star, Bassett, who were rumored to have dated and broken up. The closest either have come to speaking about the rumored relationship is when Bassett revealed he hadn't spoken to Rodrigo since "Drivers License" came out. Little explanation was given for the lack of communication, but the unfollowing suggests that the disconnect between the two continues.

It is always difficult to decipher what an unfollowing on social media means. It could potentially be a sign of moving on, disconnect, or maybe even someone just cleaning up their list of followers. Bassett's unfollowing could allude to some animosity between the two or could be a very natural drifting apart of two friends. Similar to her High School Musical: The Series character, Rodrigo's growth in her singing career means more difficulty in balancing her acting career. Not speaking for a year and unfollowing each other might just be a totally natural side effect of Rodrigo moving onto another stage in her life. However, the timing of the unfollowing does raise questions about whether there is substance to the rumors or if Bassett and Rodrigo are simply playing into the publicity the rumors have spurned. Regardless of what the unfollowing means, hopefully Rodrigo and Bassett can see past any difficulties and can continue to enjoy their time on High School Musical: The Musical: The Series as season 3 filming begins.
