He's Just Not That Into You has graduated into an old classic in the rom-com world, taking its place on the shelf next titles such as Legally Blonde and How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days. The film has become on of those solid go-to movies that are always a reliable option to pop on the screen for a slumber party or cozy night in (or any day of the week if you're in the mood for it).

In spite of the fact that rom-coms from 10 years ago are likely to have some content that didn't age so well (the genre greatly relies on stereotyping, to begin with), there is still so much good content to be found in them, such as these ten quotes from He's Just Not That Into You.

"You Love Your Friends, But You Don't Need A $45 Certificate From The State Of Maryland To Prove It."

Jennifer Aniston and Ben Aflec reunite their relationship in He's Just Not That Into You.

Neil is trying to make Beth understand why he doesn't want to marry her, not because he doesn't love her, but because he doesn't believe in marriage. Beth desperately wants to be married, not understanding why he feels so strongly about it.

Ben makes the point that friendships are deep, loving relationships, but people don't hold ceremonies for those.

"All I'm Saying Is That If A Guy Doesn't Call Me, I Would Like To Reserve The Right To Call Him At 15 Minutes Intervals Until He Picks Up."

The movie humorously remarks upon the phenomenon of people obsessing over dates calling them after the date is over. In today's world, this would be more about texting, most likely with people posing the questions, "Why haven't they texted me back? Why have they read the message but not answered?"

However, the concept remains the same; people obsess to an extreme degree, and the movie helps viewers to laugh at themselves about it.

"There Are No Rules Anymore. Why Should You Have To Wait For Him To Get Off His Ass?"

So much of the movie features women waiting around for men to get back to them after a date, or to make the first move in pretty much every other respect of the relationship.

Beth's character gives the rare example of someone within the movie suggesting that this isn't how things have to be. It isn't the '50s anymore.

"Yeah, Yeah Your Friend Terri's An Idiot. And She's Also The Exception."

Gigi and Alex at the bar together in He's Just Not That Into You

Paul shares his committed view of how dating and relationships work, which at first Gigi initially finds helpful but eventually finds suffocating. His viewpoint proves to be restrictive and cynical, casting men and women in specific roles with little wiggle room for improvisation.

He insists that most people exist in these states naturally, and that to fight it is pointless because there are so few exceptions.

"What If You Meet The Love Of Your Life But You Already Married Someone Else?"

When Anna meets Ben she is instantly smitten, and convinced that they have a connection. Feeling that it's wrong to intrude on his marriage, she convinces herself that persuing him is okay because some people are meant to be together, therefore justifying her possibly ending his marriage due to her assumption that they have such a destiny.

As we all know, things didn't end well for Anna and Ben or between Ben and Janine (his wife). This does not detract from the complicated nature of both of Ben's relationships but is a good comment on both of them.

"Wait A Second, Why I Am I Alone? Why Am I Unhappy? Why Have I Gained 20 Pounds?"

This quote comes from one of the hilarious side-bits of the movie which feature mock-interviews of people discussing their perception of relationships.

Many of these interviews prove more impressive than much of the scenes involving the main characters in the movie, perhaps because the actors in the interviews cover a more diverse body of people while the main characters are all traditionally attractive, middle class, white, and straight.

"My Tramp-ey Little Sister Says Myspace Is The New Booty Call."

Mary's storyline provides a view into the world of online dating in 2009. Although times have changed a bit since then, the issues she discusses are more or less the same. Mary doesn't know how to flirt via text, she stresses about what medium is the most appropriate to use when responding to dates, and she can't keep up with which site is considered ideal for dating and which just for booty-calls.

"I Don't Like The Way It's Pretending To Be Wood."

Janine and Ben's story is a perfect example of one partner gaslighting another; more specifically, a husband to a wife, which is the most common form and part of where the term originated from.

Ben insists he has done nothing to merit Janine's distrust, yet she can sense that something is off and that she's being lied to, and she's right. Her frustration, though valid, unfortunately comes out humorously when they are picking out wood flooring and Ben tries to get her to buy imitation wood.

"Now You Have To Go Around Checking All These Portals Just To Get Rejected By Seven Different Technologies!"

In one of the best and most relatable quotes from the movie, Mary expresses her distress over trying to keep track of modern technology and the exhaustion of modern dating.

Mary remarks on the fact that being let down is difficult in the first place, and then is made even worse by the complications of technology. A process that is already wrought with anxieties is further complicated as time goes on.

"I Found Him In Bed With The Secretary. It Was So Unoriginal It Just Made Me Feel Sorry For Him."

The wealthy divorcee is yet another mock interview character and one of the most refreshing perspectives offered in the movie. The movie primarily focuses on women giving men the upper-hand and men treating women badly.

While the divorcee is a cheater and therefore no idol, she is the only character who claims full agency over her own life, unmoved by the actions of men.
