Henry Cavill has recounted the first time he wore the Superman suit in front of director Zack Snyder. The actor has portrayed Superman in the DCEU since 2013, most recently appearing as the superhero in Justice League. As well as portraying the laser-eyed Kyrptonian, Cavill also plays Geralt of Rivia in Netflix’s hugely successful fantasy action series, The Witcher.

With his appearance in Enola Holmes as the super-sleuth Sherlock Holmes, the actor has form playing icons of British fiction, and since Daniel Craig’s departure from the role of James Bond in No Time To Die Cavill has been one of the leading names tipped to take over as 007. A sequel to Enola Holmes is currently in filming, with Cavill set to reprise his role alongside Millie Bobby Brown and Helena Bonham Carter. Aside from his mountainous physique, Cavill is known for his love of PC gaming, and as well as being a fan of The Witcher series of games, the actor previously was an avid World of Warcraft player.

Now, in an interview with THR, Cavill has shared his response to first trying on the Superman suit in front of Snyder. Although Man of Steel wasn’t released until 2013, the actor was officially announced as the new Superman in early 2011. Casting for the role had begun earlier, however, and Cavill was shooting test footage with Snyder when he first tried on the red and blue suit in 2010. Cavill has revealed that the moment he tried the suit on came with a sense of “excitement [and] achievement,” but also hesitation. Read Cavill’s comments below:

“If I’m going to be honest, what was going through my mind was, ‘Lord, I’m too fat to be wearing this suit right now’. And also, ‘I can’t believe I’m actually doing this’ — there was a sense of excitement, achievement and nervousness.”

Henry Cavill as Superman in Man of Steel

Clearly, Cavill managed to suppress his worries because he’s been starring as Superman ever since. The actor has confirmed that he hopes to continue to play the DCEU superhero into the future but has admitted he’s unsure when that might be. The original version of the Justice League failed to yield the financial and critical success that studio executives had hoped for, making the long-term future of the DCEU, and Superman, uncertain. Casting more doubt on Cavill’s future are the plans for a new Superman film, written by Ta-Nehisi Coates and featuring Michael B. Jordan as the leading Kryptonian.

In the meantime, Cavill has commented on whether he’d be open to playing Marvel’s Captain Britain in the MCU. With The Witcher and his other commitments, the actor already has a busy schedule, but has said that if the character was modernized in a similar way to Chris Evans’ Captain America, he would be keen to take on the project. Whether or not DCEU fans ever get to see Cavill as Superman again, or MCU fans ever get to see him as Captain Britain, the actor will continue to lead some of TV and cinema's biggest projects for the foreseeable future.
