Henry Cavill's return as Superman can make Sasha Calle's Supergirl an established DCEU character despite the many difficulties behind The Flash. After several canceled DC projects, repeated delays, and personal controversies from DC actors, directors, and producers, to say that the DCEU has gone through a period of uncertainty would be an understatement. Fortunately, the DCEU seems to have started to course-correct, and Henry Cavill's return as Superman after a long absence is a great sign for the whole franchise.
One of the DCEU projects that have gone through multiple obstacles is The Flash. Just two of the most notable issues The Flash is facing are Ezra Miller's questionable behavior and the movie's uncertain impact on the DCEU's future, as the recent changes in Warner Bros.' plans may clash with its multiversal story. Now, Sasha Calle's Supergirl may not become the key DCEU hero that The Flash was setting her up to be. But while Supergirl may not be the DCEU's central "Super" character anymore, she could star alongside Henry Cavill's Superman in future installments.
Cavill's Return Could Lead To A Superman & Supergirl Team-Up In The DCEU
Barry Allen's trip through the multiverse in The Flash suggests that Sasha Calle's Supergirl comes from a different universe than Henry Cavill's Superman. It's easy to see how if Cavill didn't return to the big screen, Supergirl could have taken his place. But now that the Man of Steel is back, Superman's return doesn't mean Supergirl should be set aside.
Instead of retconning Supergirl into being the DCEU's one and only Super, The Flash could simply bring Supergirl over to the main DCEU universe. Then, Supergirl can be included in Superman's next DCEU appearance, where both heroes could bond over their similar abilities and possibly shared origin. With Henry Cavill back, the DCEU won't have to explain either Supergirl's absence in previous DCEU movies or Superman's absence in a hypothetical Supergirl movie taking place in a different timeline.
Supergirl Still Deserves A DCEU Solo Movie After The Flash
Batgirl's cancelation seems like a bad omen for many Warner Bros. projects. After all, if they can ax a fully completed movie, other projects in development might not fare any better. A Supergirl spinoff after The Flash would have been ideal to fill the void left by Henry Cavill's absence, as Supergirl could have carried Superman's legacy while still giving the DCEU a fresh start with a new Kryptonian hero.
Now, Henry Cavill's Superman return strengthens Supergirl's potential, as a possible Man of Steel 2 could feature Supergirl as a co-star after her introduction in The Flash as well as set up a spinoff movie of her own. The Superman and Supergirl movies can now be interconnected, and both Kryptonians can become key characters in the DCEU going forward, both together and independently.
