Henry Cavill can't tell us exactly when he'll be donning Superman's cape and spit curl next, but the actor suggests fans might not have to wait too long to see the Kryptonian hero again following his resurrection in Justice League.

Cavill's Superman was the first superhero out of the gate for the DC Extended Universe in Man of Steel, but he's been somewhat marginalized as the shared universe has developed. Instead of a straight sequel, he ended up sharing the stage with Ben Affleck's Dark Knight in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, and then with the rest of DC's finest in Justice League. Following that film's financial failure, certain aspects of DC's film future have been left in a state of limbo, chief among the knowledge of when we might see Superman again.

Henry Cavill isn't ready to divulge that information just yet, but he's offering some coy hints. In an interview with Fandango while promoting the upcoming Mission Impossible: Fallout (the film responsible for his now infamous mustache), Cavill suggests that plans are afoot to bring Superman back soon, but he doesn't offer any hard information beyond the fact he's excited to suit back up.

At the moment, there are only three DC films that appear to be mortal locks: the December releasing Aquaman, the in-production Shazam!, and next year's '80s set Wonder Woman sequel. A plethora of other films have been announced but are all in varying degrees of pre-production. Oddly, one film that we've heard very little about is the Man of Steel sequel. There were rumblings that Matthew Vaughn might step into the director's chair - Zack Snyder's continued involvement with the DCEU seems highly unlikely at this point - but that talk has largely dissipated.

The DCEU is in a transitional period at the moment. Wonder Woman was the shared universe's first unqualified success, and there are indications the tone of the future films will move away from Snyder's dark deconstructions and hew closer to Patty Jenkins' earnest heroism. No hero lends themselves to that kind of morally pure storytelling better than Superman, and we saw hints of that version of the character in Justice League.

As for when we might next see Superman, it seems unlikely it'll be in a Superman movie. Rumors have circulated for awhile that he'll turn up for a cameo in Shazam!, a rumor that's only gained steam due to Cavill and Zachary Levi's burgeoning Instagram bromance. Cavill is rumored to have recently renewed his contract to play Clark Kent several more times, so he's certainly game to be the DCEU's Superman for the foreseeable future, even with some tonal fine tuning.
