Warner Bros doesn't seem to think the world is ready for another Superman solo movie with star Henry Cavill. The DC Extended Universe as a whole has been in a state of flux ever since Justice League failed to meet expectations. The studio has had to dramatically rethink its slate due to constant delays on movies like The Flash and the departure of Ben Affleck as Batman. Warner Bros has, however, found success with solo movies like Aquaman and Shazam!

Recently, fans were given some measure of clarity on the future of Superman after it was revealed the studio was in talks with Cavill for another DCEU appearance, a move that reportedly put the long-rumored Supergirl movie on hold. In the meantime, Henry Cavill has remained tangentially involved with the role, recently appearing on a live-stream with Zack Snyder while donning his infamous Justice League mustache. Fans have also remained vocally interested in seeing the actor return to the role, most recently evidenced by Shazam! director David F. Sandberg hilariously completing Cavill's cameo in his movie so fans will "stop messaging [him] about it."

According to "insider informationreceived over at Heroic Hollywood, Warner Bros. is not confident there is sufficient interest in a solo adventure for Cavill's Superman at this time and instead hopes to build up the character by having him play a supporting role for the foreseeable future. The full insider quote reads:

A stand-alone Superman movie would not be successful at this time. Perhaps once there's more momentum after playing a supporting role in some successful DC films, there would be more of a chance for a stand-alone film.

Man of Steel Superman Black Suit

It's surprising to see the studio so bearish on a Man of Steel sequel's prospects, given the recent history of both the character and its actor. However, as this is just a rumor, it should be taken with a grain of salt. Superman's return to life, and to being a brighter and less dour character, was one of the few agreed upon highlights of Justice League. Plus, Cavill himself has only grown more prominent in the public eye after a scene-stealing turn in Mission: Impossible - Fallout and his starring role in Netflix's The Witcher.

Of course, the shadow of recasting hangs over Superman's head anyway. It wouldn't be the first major DC role to go in a new direction considering the recent Batman recasting. The studio, and Cavill himself, have assured fans the cape is still in his closet. However, with the future of Superman still uncertain, and Snyder's Justice League not planning any reshoots, it's unclear when, if ever, Cavill will return to the role.
