At the height of the anticipation for Justice League, Henry Cavill cracks down the reason why he thinks superheroes are great story materials for movies. Superhero-centric media has dominated Hollywood for quite a while now with several companies building franchises off of a wide range of comic book characters. Despite obviously being fictional, these blockbusters continue to resonate with people investing both their time and money to follow these characters’ personal arcs.

Some of the more popular superhero movies are the ones that come from DC Films, and Warner Bros. is on the cusp of releasing their first ensemble big screen project, bringing together Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash, and Cyborg in one epic spectacle. Longtime fans, as well as new ones, are bubbling with excitement over what the Zack Snyder-film has in store for them.

At Justice League‘s recent press conference in London, Cavill, who has played the role of Superman for almost five years now since 2013’s Man of Steel, opens up on why he thinks these superhero-centric movies are very popular not just with comic book fans but with the general movie-going audience:

“Watching the team dynamic as characters is one of my favorite things about this movie, because superheroes are all different factions of the human psyche, personality traits, just personified and made grand. So everyone who’s watched this movie will have something they can associate with while watching each one of these performances. And everyone watching this movie is going to identify with the At the between characters and the similarities between characters as well.”

These kinds of films are currently the most popular form of escapism not only because they take you out of the harsh reality out there, but because they take you out of the difficult situation and let you see it from an outsiders’ perspective, making you realize that superheroes are not immune to trials and tribulations. Even Superman, who has basically devoted his life to saving other people, was questioned and bashed in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice — an experience that most of us also has to deal with. Still Clark chose to be good until the end, resulting in the world realizing how wrong they were about him. At this point, superheroes films are the contemporary version of parables and legends — each film aims to inspire us to be better people every time we get out of the cinemas.

The things is, if these characters and stories have captured the imagination of a generation back when it still solely came in the form of print, it’s understandable that more people are going to be fascinated by it when it is brought to life on the big screen with the set pieces and grand spectacle. While all the special effects do help to heighten our experience of learning more about these characters, it still boils down to a good story and interesting game players.

In a few days, we’ll find out if Justice League does live up to our expectations of how epic it must be to see DC’s best superheroes all come together in one movie. But for those who are anxious about the project (following all the rumors about a troubled production), it seems to be doing just well with test screenings reportedly having the same reaction as Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman.
