Henry Cavill will not be returning to the DC Universe as Superman and won’t continue to play Geralt of Rivia in Netflix’s The Witcher, so what’s next for him? The DCU is going through big changes now that James Gunn and Peter Safran have become co-chairs and co-CEOs of DC Studios, and while their new 10-year plan hasn’t been revealed in its entirety, details about it have already been shared with the public. Among the most shocking changes in their plan is the cancelation of Wonder Woman 3 and Man of Steel 2.

The news about Man of Steel 2 raised questions about the future of Henry Cavill in the DCU, as he officially announced his return as Superman in October, but it’s now confirmed that he won’t be back as the DCU will explore other parts of Superman’s story that don’t include Cavill. In addition to that, that same month, Cavill announced his exit from The Witcher after the third season, with Liam Hemsworth taking over the role of Geralt of Rivia. With no more Superman and The Witcher for Henry Cavill, what’s next for him in film and TV?

Argylle

Dua Lipa and Henry Cavill embracing in Argylle Movie

Superman and The Witcher aren’t in Henry Cavill’s plans for the near future, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a couple of projects already lined up. First is Argylle, a spy movie directed and produced by Matthew Vaugh, and based on the to-be-released novel of the same name by Elly Conway. Argylle follows a world-class spy suffering from amnesia who is tricked into believing he’s a best-selling spy novelist. Once his memories and lethal skills return, he goes on a revenge mission against the shadowy organization he used to work for: the Division. Also starring in Argylle are Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, Samuel L. Jackson, John Cena, Ariana DeBose, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Dua Lipa. Argylle is intended to be the start of a trilogy and is expected to be released in 2023.

The Rosie Project

The rosie project

In July 2021, Cavill joined The Rosie Project, based on the novel of the same name by Graeme Simsion. Directed by Steve Falk, The Rosie Project is the story of an unlucky-in-love professor who creates an elaborate questionnaire in an effort to find a wife. However, he meets an unconventional woman who doesn’t match any of his requirements, but she might actually be the perfect match for him, after all. Although The Rosie Project was reportedly planned to start shooting in 2022, there have been no updates since it was announced, and there’s no projected release date for it.

The Ministry Of Ungentlemanly Warfare

The Ministry Of Ungentlemanly Warfare

In October 2022, Cavill was announced as part of the cast of the action spy movie The Ministry Of Ungentlemanly Warfare, based on the book of the same name by war correspondent and military historian, Damien Lewis. The project will be directed by Guy Ritchie, with whom Cavill previously worked on the spy movie The Man From U.N.C.L.E., and it follows a small group of highly-skilled soldiers recruited by the British military to strike against Nazi forces behind enemy lines during World War II – but the squad’s fighting techniques were quite unconventional and “ungentlemanly”.

According to Deadline, Cavill will play the leader of said secret combat organization, and he will be joined by Eiza González, who will play a military sniper with extraordinary spy-craft abilities. In the same report by Deadline, it’s explained that Ritchie and producer Jerry Bruckheimer are planning The Ministry Of Ungentlemanly Warfare as a franchise, so if the movie does well critically and financially, there could be more of Cavill as the leader of a military squad. At the time of writing, The Ministry Of Ungentlemanly Warfare doesn’t have a projected release date.

Warhammer

Henry Cavill Warhammer 40K TV Series News

In December 2022, Henry Cavill announced a brand new project that combines acting with another of his well-known passions: video games. Cavill announced a Warhammer TV show, to be developed by Amazon and with him attached to star and executive produce. In an Instagram post with a teaser video, Cavill explained that this is the first step in a Warhammer Cinematic Universe, and that they are now looking for their “filmmaker/creator/writer”. However, Amazon hasn’t closed the deal to the Warhammer rights yet, so the project is in its very first phases of pre-production, but if everything goes as planned and expected, this could be Cavill’s biggest project post-Superman and The Witcher.

Henry Cavill Will Still Be In The Witcher Season 3

Geralt with wounds on his face and glowing eyes looking fierce in The Witcher.

Henry Cavill has been playing Geralt of Rivia in Netflix’s The Witcher TV series since 2019, and his performance has been praised by critics and viewers. Cavill reprised his role as the famous monster hunter for the series’ second season, but his time as Geralt of Rivia is coming to an end with the upcoming third season. The Witcher was renewed for a third season ahead of the release of the second, and season 3 wrapped filming in September 2022. As mentioned above, Cavill’s exit was announced in October 2022, so fans of The Witcher will get to see Cavill as Geralt of Rivia one last time in the upcoming season 3. Fans of The Witcher have been quite vocal about Liam Hemsworth taking over the role of Geralt in the upcoming fourth season, so it’s to be seen if the series will continue with more seasons after this big shake-up.

Henry Cavill's Highlander Reboot Could Happen Now

Highlander Reboot update

In May 2021, Cavill was announced to play the lead role in the reboot of Highlander, though it was unclear exactly who he will play. A Highlander reboot/remake has been trapped in development hell for years, but after many ups and downs and changes in its cast and production crew, in 2016 Chad Stahelski was confirmed to direct the project. Highlander is the story of Connor MacLeod (famously played by Christopher Lambert), who was born in the Scottish Highlands in the 16th century, and after reviving from a fatal wound and being banished from his village, he’s found by swordsman Ramírez (Sean Connery), who explains to him that they (and others) were born immortal. However, the immortals wage a secret war, where the last ones standing will meet at the Gathering to fight for the Prize.

However, Highlander seems to still be in development hell, as there haven’t been any substantial updates since the project was announced, but in August 2022, Stahelski shared in an interview with Collider that they were “closer than we’ve ever been” to making it happen, but no more has been revealed since then. With Cavill no longer involved in the two biggest franchises he was in, this could be the push the Highlander reboot needs to finally move forward.

Will Henry Cavill Be The Next James Bond?

Henry Cavill as James Bond 007

Since it was confirmed that No Time Die was Daniel Craig's final Bond movie, speculation about who will take his place hasn’t stopped – and a name that has been mentioned as a potential replacement even before Craig’s exit was confirmed is Henry Cavill. In fact, Cavill was a final choice for the role of James Bond in Casino Royale back in 2005, but Daniel Craig ended up getting the role. Years later, Cavill expressed interest in taking over the role after Daniel Craig’s departure, but so far, Cavill becoming the next James Bond is just speculation and rumors. However, with Superman and Geralt of Rivia no longer in Henry Cavill’s plans, this might give him the upper hand in the race for the role of James Bond, if he’s still interested in it.
