Back before the DC Extended Universe was officially created, Warner Bros. launched a new franchise around Superman with Henry Cavill donning the iconic red cape. After Man of Steel, the studio expanded the world around Superman with an ambitious slate that continues to evolve. One such move involves Dwayne Johnson joining the DCEU as the magic-powered Black Adam in the upcoming Shazam! movie.
Even with a tentative release date and Johnson attached, few updates have been released about Johnson's superhero debut or the cast joining him. But the holidays are nothing if not a time for giving, and Cavill has done just that, joining with Johnson to enjoy an adult beverage in Florida, while also wishing his fans the best and taking time to tease a potential big screen meeting between Superman and Black Adam.
While the photo Cavill posted on his Instagram didn't reveal much visually, the actor has a way with social media, as he managed to create plenty of speculation with the hashtags #DangerousGentlemen, #DCWorldsCollide, and, of course, #Superman. Take a look at the image below:
Merry Christmas a Happy New Year from Superman and Black Adam @therock . Today we drink like gentleman and come together as friends. We're excited for what the future brings.. #DangerousGentleman #DCWorldsWillCollide #Superman
The photo and caption could be completely innocuous; just two actors getting together to spread a little holiday cheer on social media. And while it's possible that Johnson and Cavill may work together on one of the former's many upcoming projects like Rampage, Doc Savage, or San Andreas 2, it doesn't seem as though that's the direction they want fans heading in.
In fact, it's impossible to read the hashtags and not think about the potential for Superman and Black Adam to cross paths in the near future. Cavill is slated to next appear as Superman in Justice League, but it would be quite the surprise for Black Adam to make an appearance, as Johnson's involvement in that project would have been a huge secret for the production to keep under wraps. The more likely encounter may be in Justice League 2, Man of Steel 2, or simply for Superman to potentially cameo in Shazam!, much like how Ben Affleck's Batman popped up in Suicide Squad.
It is all just speculation at this point, but Cavill's tease seems engineered to create as much speculation as possible. Both characters exist within the same universe, so an encounter is not out of the realm of possibility. Hopefully this has some merit to it, and the DCEU faithful will one day get to see the two characters share the screen.
