Hellraiser reboot star Jamie Clayton reveals the process of making her new Pinhead mask. Hulu is set to release a new imagining of Clive Barker’s classic horror movie with a story by David S. Goyer and David Bruckner taking over directorial duties.

Barker of course not only directed the original Hellraiser but wrote the story upon which it was based. The 1987 film not only came to be considered a horror masterpiece, introducing the classic character of Pinhead in the process, it also spawned an entire franchise. Unfortunately that franchise mostly did not live up to the gruesome and kinky original, and most latter-day entries ended up going straight-to-video. But Bruckner hopes his new Hellraiser can revive the series, and to pull this off he says he’s going straight back to Barker’s source story “The Hellbound Heart.” The movie will also put a new twist on Pinhead by replacing Doug Bradley with Clayton.

It was indeed a major reveal when Clayton was recently named as the actor taking on the role of Pinhead (especially after previous reports incorrectly said Odessa A'Zion had actually landed the part). In a new video, Clayton shows some of what playing Pinhead entails, sharing a clip of make-up artists creating a cast of her head in order to create the Pinhead mask. No spoiler alerts are necessary here as the clip does not reveal Clayton’s Pinhead look, just the process of her head cast being made (indeed the film has already finished shooting, and this footage is actually from July). No doubt there will soon be a big reveal of Hellraiser’s Pinhead however, and fans eagerly await this first glimpse at what Bruckner and company have come up with. And if producer Goyer is to be believed, fans will be impressed by the new movie’s vision of Barker’s story, as he recently called Bruckner’s footage “terrifying and amazing” and the new Cenobites “jaw-dropping.”

Of course what Hellraiser fans wanted more than anything was a new entry in the franchise written and directed by Barker himself. That isn’t what they’re getting obviously, but there is reason to be optimistic that the new caretakers of Hellraiser will get it right when it comes to realizing Barker’s very particular vision of hell. Going off in a new direction with Pinhead is of course a bit of a gamble. However, it’s also arguable that the Hellraiser franchise was going nowhere with its classic portrayal of Pinhead, so a big change was needed. Whether the right changes have been made is something that is yet to be seen. Hellraiser does not yet have a release date from Hulu.
