A TV show based on Clive Barker's Hellraiser horror franchise is coming to HBO, and here's everything we know about the project so far. Hellraiser was once one of the most famous horror properties in the world, but unfortunately, the last couple of decades haven't been very kind to it. 1987's original Hellraiser and 1988 sequel Hellbound: Hellraiser 2 both tend to be regarded as classics, while 1992's Hellraiser 3: Hell on Earth has a vocal following, and even 1996's Hellraiser: Bloodline has its fans.

After that though, Hellraiser was shunted to the unforgiving world of direct-to-video sequels, and while future Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson did pretty well with Hellraiser: Inferno, every sequel after that ranged from meh to dreadful. The budgets got lower and lower, the special effects got less and less convincing, and the actors eventually brought in to play Pinhead failed to even approach the greatness of genre icon Doug Bradley's legendary work in the role of Hellraiser's leading Cenobite.

A theatrical Hellraiser reboot meant to restore the franchise to glory has been stuck in development hell for a long time now, with the most recent attempt being announced in 2019. There haven't been many updates on that since, but in the meantime, HBO of all networks is jumping into the Hellraiser game on TV, and here's what we know.

HBO's Hellraiser TV Show Release Date

The labyrinth of Hell as seen in Hellraiser II

As the Hellraiser TV show was only recently announced, there's been no release date or timeframe given yet by HBO. That said, it'll be interesting to see if this TV show arrives before the movie reboot, which is reportedly entirely separate from HBO's small-screen project, and is not being produced by the same team. One wonders if fans will eventually have two onscreen Pinheads existing simultaneously.

The Cenobites from Hellraiser

HBO's Hellraiser TV show is in great creative hands so far, with David Gordon Green set to direct the pilot and several other initial episodes, with scripts written by both Mark Verheiden and Michael Dougherty. That's an all-star team, as Green directed Halloween's smash hit 2018 reboot, while Verheiden has written for shows like Daredevil and Constantine, and Dougherty wrote and directed Trick 'r Treat and Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

HBO's Hellraiser TV Show Story Details

Hellraiser - Doug Bradley as Pinhead

While it seems unlikely that Doug Bradley will return to play Pinhead - he's in his mid-60s after all - we do know that the iconic character will indeed be part of HBO's Hellraiser TV show. The actual story is being kept under wraps for now, but it won't be a remake or reboot, and will serve to continue and expand on the existing Hellraiser mythology. That should be a comfort to fans who disliked Halloween 2018's sequel retcon approach.
