Milla Jovovich has risen as the Blood Queen in a new advertising banner heralding the upcoming Hellboy reboot. Mike Mignola's graphic novel series Hellboy first came to the screen in 2004, starring Ron Perlman as the titular demonic superhero. Guillermo del Toro directed the first Hellboy adaptation and its 2008 sequel Hellboy: The Golden Army. While del Toro then tried to get Hellboy 3 off the ground for years, he ultimately had to abandon the project.

With del Toro no longer guiding Hellboy as a film franchise, Neil Marshall takes over directorial reins for the coming reboot. Unlike the del Toro Hellboy films, the new incarnation will carry an R-rating, allowing Marshall to unleash the carnage in a way del Toro could not. David Harbour of Stranger Things (and dad-dancing meme) fame takes over the role of Hellboy. Ian McShane also joins the cast as Professor Broom, the role originated by John Hurt in del Toro's films. Daniel Dae Kim also jumps aboard as Ben Daimio after Ed Skrein initially accepted and then graciously gave up the part.

With Harbour in place as the new Hellboy, Resident Evil star Milla Jovovich takes on the villainous role of Nimue the Blood Queen. Jovovich herself teased the movie and her role by posting a shot of an advertising banner showing the Blood Queen and Hellboy. Perhaps disappointingly, the banner does not include actual images from the film. You can check out the banner below:

In Hellboy lore, Nimue the Blood Queen is a powerful witch who lived during the time of King Arthur and was taught the secrets of magic by Merlin himself. Unfortunately, Nimue later went insane and began worshipping the Lovecraftian gods the Ogdru Jahad, leading to her murder at the hands of her fellow witches. Centuries later, Nimue experienced a resurrection when the fairy Grugach, an enemy of Hellboy, poured the blood of an entire slaughtered village into her tomb. And that of course is how Nimue got her name the Blood Queen. In the comics, Hellboy and Nimue battle after Hellboy gets his hands on Excalibur and uses it to raise an army of knights. But in a twist, the Ogdru Jahad transform Nimue into a dragon.

It will be interesting to see how much of that crazy Arthurian angle remains in the movie reboot. The film did shoot at Wells Cathedral in England, suggesting it will have a more British flavor than previous Hellboy films. In keeping with the British theme, Harbour has compared the character of Hellboy to Shakespeare's Hamlet. As for the movie's fidelity to Mike Mignola's vision, Mignola himself said the new film "really leaned on" his comics. All indications are the Hellboy reboot will prove a much more comics-faithful vision than del Toro's films.
