After making some brief appearances in the established Hellboy universe, Frankenstein will star in his very own miniseries: Frankenstein: New World – one that will further explore the ghoulish state of the world after it was irrevocably changed during the events of the previous Hellboy saga.

The four-part miniseries Frankenstein: New World will be written by an all-star team of Hellboy alums including the creator of the series Mike Mignola, bestselling novelist and comics writer Christopher Golden, and comic book writer Thomas Sniegoski. The series will be illustrated by artist Peter Bergting with Michelle Madson on as colorist and Clem Robins as letterer. The first issue of the series will feature a variant cover drawn by Mignola and colored by award-winning colorist Dave Stewart. This creative team has a long history with the Hellboy universe, a fictional world that was believed to have been concluded with B.P.R.D.: The Devil You Know, and they have all returned to offer their creative talents to this haunting new series.

In a release from Dark Horse Comics announcing the new book, Hellboy creator Mike Mignola offers insight into the creation of this new series following the climactic events of B.P.R.D.: The Devil You Know. “At the end of B.P.R.D.: The Devil You Know when we burned down the world and then started it again with frog people, I really did think that would be all we’d see of it,” said Migola. However, as the comic creator explains, after speaking with their creative team, it became clear that there was still another story left to tell in this strange world re-shaped by B.P.R.D.: The Devil You Know. “But… when Chris and Tom came to me with the idea of having Frankenstein’s adventures in Frog World, I think it took me about ten seconds to say YES.

In B.P.R.D.: The Devil You Know, fans are given a brief glimpse of Frankenstein – who had made a number of previous appearance throughout the Hellboy mythos – safely tucked away inside of the Earth’s hollow core while the entirety of the planet above was re-formed into what has been dubbed "Frog World." In Frankenstein: New World, a young character named Lilja is having visions of a sinister darkness that is threatening to overtake the surface world. So, despite being ordered not to by her elders, Lilja awakens the timeless oracle Frankenstein in the hopes that the creature will investigate the dark visions and explore the new world.

Arguably the most breathtaking aspect of this new Dark Horse miniseries will be the artwork as it is teased as being quiet and creepy with bizarre locations and interesting world designs – something the creative team hopes will be a balance of dread and wonder. Based on the raw enthusiasm and proven talent of the creative team, Frankenstein's new solo series is sure to be a striking addition to the Hellboy mythos. Dark Horse Comics’ Frankenstein: New World #1 will be available August 3, 2022.
