Millennium Media confirms plot and title details about their just-revealed Hellboy reboot movie. Guillermo Del Toro was the first director to bring comic book character Hellboy to life on movie screens, crafting a pair of films starring Ron Perlman as the titular demonic giant. The franchise then went dormant before being rebooted in 2019 with David Harbour taking over for Perlman.

2019’s Hellboy reboot was unfortunately a major flop, grossing just $55 million at the box office. Nevertheless, Millennium Media is ready to go back to the Hellboy well again. The existence of another coming Hellboy reboot was recently reported, and now Millennium has confirmed certain details, including the film’s title Hellboy: The Crooked Man (via Deadline). That confirmation also confirms the new film’s source material, the 2008 comic book title of the same name, which came out in conjunction with the Hellboy 2 movie. Perhaps most excitingly for Hellboy comics fans, the new film will be written by comic creator Mike Mignola.

Can Mike Mignola Create The Perfect Hellboy Movie

Mignola of course did not write any of the first three Hellboy movies himself, though he did receive a story credit on Hellboy 2. In addition to their other confirmations, Millennium has also offered up details about the plot of Mignola’s new script, which follows Hellboy and a rookie BRPD agent as they become stranded in rural Appalachia in the 1950s, and encounter the titular Crooked Man, a hanged Civil War profiteer who’s come back from the dead as a local devil.

Millennium Media’s president said about the movie in a statement:

“The Crooked Man is a departure from all previous Hellboy films where Mike Mignola and the creator of the comics will finally shepherd an authentic version of his stories and characters in film form. This is the first in the series of films that will captivate audiences in familiar (and new) ways. [Director] Brian Taylor is an expert across the board, and I couldn’t think of a better person to bring this story to life to show our audience this different and original Hellboy slate of films.”

Having Mignola on-board as screenwriter may prove to be an asset for the new film, though it has also been argued that the last Hellboy reboot failed because it tried too hard to be faithful to the comics. Of course, a big part of the Hellboy equation is the actor behind the main character’s demonic makeup, and fans will be watching closely to see whose names come up for the job (as Harbour is assumed not to be returning). So far things sound promising on the Hellboy reboot front, but after the last reboot’s failure, it’s fair to be skeptical about the actual value of the IP when it comes to movies.
