Fans of The Hills may never forget the drama that went down during the Young Hollywood party on the debut episode of the series, but Heidi Montag admits the whole scene was staged. It's no secret that not everything on The Hills was as real as fans initially thought it was. The show's stars have been exposing secrets from the show for years, and star Spencer Pratt even started his own TikTok series called The Spills to let fans in on behind-the-scenes information that producers didn't want them to know. Throughout the show run, the MTV reality series faked and manipulated several scenes, according to Spencer.
The scene that Heidi is calling out appeared on the first episode of the show, which premiered in 2006 as a spinoff of Laguna Beach. Main star Lauren Conrad gained so much popularity from the reality series which followed her senior year at high school that MTV launched a show to follow her to Los Angeles, where she landed an internship with Teen Vogue. Lauren met Whitney Port the day of her interview, and when they both landed internships at the magazine, they were tossed into the fast-paced media world when their first assignment required them to work the Young Hollywood Party. Lauren was already in over her head when Heidi showed up with her friends, and with help from Whitney and Lauren, she snuck into the party and started causing trouble.
Lauren ended up getting in trouble since it was her first work event, and she had already messed up. But a fan on Twitter wondered how accurate the scene was, and Heidi let them know it wasn't very real at all. The Hills fan @NicoleeeeeeKK tweeted, "rewatching The Hills, and I notice they IMMEDIATELY try to paint the narrative as Heidi being the irresponsible, shitty friend. Was the entire Young Hollywood party situation staged? I assume yes." Heidi was quick to respond to the fan that her instincts were correct and the party scene was as fake as it seemed to be.
"Yes, they asked me to do that for the show," Heidi responded. In the scene, Lauren's main responsibility at the party was to guard the VIP section and make sure no one sat there. Unfortunately, the first thing Heidi and her friends did when they made it past the entrance was sit down in the VIP section despite Lauren's wishes. The party drama continued when Heidi and her then-boyfriend Jordan Eubanks got into a fight. Heidi's husband, Spencer, has also raised questions about Lauren's job at Teen Vogue. The star claims that a real intern that wasn't on a popular MTV reality show would never be given the jobs Lauren and Whitney were given, and the whole position was faked so that The Hills could have exciting storylines.
Heidi's confession comes as no surprise. The Hills may have seemed real back in 2006 when reality TV was still relatively new, but as years go by, it becomes blatantly obvious that much of the show was fake. It's been over 15 years since the show aired, and fans are still digging for answers on how authentic their favorite scenes from the show were. As long as cast members are willing to give them answers, they'll probably never stop searching for the truth behind The Hills. As fans have learned through the years who Heidi truly is versus how she was portrayed on the show, it's not surprising the star was not actually crashing a party and getting her friend in trouble. That was just The Hills doing what it does best and staging scenes that viewers fell for time and time again.
