Heartstopper season 2 is set to premiere in August, but there are already some clues about what the season will cover. Heartstopper was an instant success when it premiered in April 2022, making it easy for Netflix to renew it for a second season a month later. The show is based on the Graphic Novel series of the same name by British author Alice Oseman and stars Joe Locke and Kit Connor as the show's lead characters, Charlie Spring and Nick Nelson. The series also stars Academy Award-winning actress Olivia Colman as Nick's mother, Sarah Nelson.

Heartstopper season 1's ending left plenty of space for a second season. Charlie and Nick worked through all their issues and became an official couple by the end of the season, meaning season 2 can further explore their love story. There are also some unfinished storylines, like whatever's going on with Elle and Tao and the potential for characters like Imogen to grow. Heartstopper hasn't released an official season 2 trailer yet, but some teasers have revealed what's to come.

7 Nick & Charlie Navigate A Relationship

Throughout Heartstopper season 1, Nick and Charlie struggled with their feelings for each other. Charlie felt it was wrong to like Nick because of who his friends were, and Charlie's friends discouraged the relationship. Nick had trouble understanding his sexuality and was afraid to come out to his friends and family. However, by the end, Nick and Charlie decided their feelings for each other were stronger than their fears, and they made their relationship official.

According to a Netflix tweet, Heartstopper season 2 will delve deeper into the two's relationship. In true high school drama fashion, the two will likely have many obstacles. Now that they're both out, hiding their relationship isn't a problem, but the bullying from last season might only worsen. They could also struggle with balancing their relationship among school work, friendships, and extracurricular activities. Heartstopper season 1 saw Charlie's friends feeling like he blew them off for Nick, and now that they're an official couple, this might worsen.

6 Tara & Darcy's Relationship Is Challenged

Heartstopper Darcy and Tara

Tara isn't out at the start of Heartstopper season 1, and initially, everyone thinks she and Nick would be good together. However, she comes out to him at a party, and she and Darcy kiss on the dance floor. The couple faces bullying from their classmates, which Tara takes pretty hard, but Darcy can brush it off fairly easily.

Besides their peers' negative reactions, everything is pretty much smooth sailing for the pair in season 1. However, Netflix revealed the two would face some challenges in the second season. This makes sense as no relationship is perfect, and season 1 was their honeymoon phase, meaning things are bound to get tough in Heartstopper season 2.

5 Elle & Tao Figure Out Their Feelings For Each Other

Heartstopper Elle and Tao

In Heartstopper season 1, Elle and Tao realize they have romantic feelings for each other, but neither knows what to do about it. It's the classic friend-to-lovers storyline that always finds characters yearning to take their friendship to the next level while simultaneously worrying their romantic feelings for each other could destroy their friendship, causing them to never speak again. Heartstopper season 1 resolves Nick and Charlie's relationship drama but leaves Elle and Tao's situation open-ended. Luckily, season 2 will reveal more about their dynamic as they decide whether to act on their romantic feelings for each other or if they'd rather remain friends.

4 Imogen Focuses On Herself Instead Of Boys

Heartstopper Season 1 Imogen

Imogen, who, with Isaac, wasn't in the Heartstopper books, was set on being with Nick throughout Heartstopper season 1, and she was devastated when he canceled their date, so he could attend Charlie's birthday. She even approached Tara to make sure she wasn't dating Nick so she could assure herself they could be together. However, when Nick tells her he isn't interested, she takes it well and is happy for him and Charlie when she sees them together.

Season 1 may have portrayed Imogen as boy-crazy, but season 2 has a different angle for her character. The actress who portrays Imogen, Rhea Norwood, revealed in a short Heartstopper teaser from Netflix that Imogen would focus on herself in season 2 instead of being boy-crazy and trying to get the guy she likes to like her back. This will certainly make her character more likable, and it sets an excellent example for young girls who might find themselves prioritizing boys over their well-being.

3 Elle Becomes More Confident

Elle's main struggle in Hearstopper season 1 is that she recently transferred schools and has difficulties making new friends. Elle also has family issues as she's transgender, and her Egyptian family members do not accept her gender identity. These issues chip away at Elle's confidence, as they would any high school student.

However, actress Yasmin Finney revealed Elle would be more confident in season 2. This is good to hear, as the beloved character deserves to own who she is and be proud of it. This could play into her dynamic with Tao as the new confident Elle might find it easier to admit her feelings for him instead of fearing the consequences.

2 It's A Different 'Vibe' Than Heartstopper Season 1

According to Connor, the new Heartstopper season is a different vibe than the first season. In the teaser, he calls the season "cool and fresh." It's hard to decipher what this means based on limited information, but it seems positive. The season's tone is likely to differ since Charlie and Nick are in a relationship. All of Charlie's insecurities about his feelings for Nick and what his friends will think are gone.

However, the season will likely bring up a series of new insecurities for both of them. Since fans have already gotten to know the characters in season 1, Hearstopper's second season can dive deeper into the characters, including the home lives of characters like Tara and Darcy. This would set a different vibe for their dynamic than the first season.

1 Charlie's Season 2 Story Is More Mature

Locke doesn't go into much depth about how his character grows. He only admits that Charlie's storyline matures past what fans saw in season 1. Now that Charlie is in a relationship with someone he deeply cares about, he will have to make sacrifices and prioritize Nick's life and his own. He didn't have to do this much in season 1 since he and Nick weren't official, and he was still trying to figure out if dating Nick was a good idea.

His relationship with Nick will give him a new perspective on life and will challenge him in ways he hasn't been before. Nick might also be dealing with the adjustment of being out and in a relationship, meaning Charlie will have to step up and be there for his boyfriend in Heartstopper season 2, forcing him to be more mature than most high school students are capable of.
