HBO's True Detective is a crime drama that features different storylines every season, as detectives around the United States investigate brutal homicides that push them to the edge. The first season of the series was released way back in 2014, featuring two officers - Rustin Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) and Martin Hart (Woody Harrelson) running around Louisiana chasing a cult killer, who seems to be doing the bidding for the devil.

It borders around a horror story, as the past and present interlinks to give the viewers a twisted tale. To date, the first season is considered True Detective's best outing, so without further ado, let's rank every episode in season 1 of the show, according to IMDb.

Seeing Things (8.9)

In the second episode of season 1, back in 1995,  Cohle and Hart continue their investigation regarding a gruesome murder. While some secrets are revealed, Cohle, using his knowledge, deduces that Hart is cheating on his wife. Moreover, Cohle, after taking some drugs, experiences hallucinations that might come in between the investigation.

Meanwhile, back in the present (2012), Papania and Gilbough continue to take separate interviews of Cohle and Hart. Cohle also reveals his background before he was partnered with Hart in the Homicide department.

The Long Bright Dark (9.0)

In the first episode of season 1, it's 1995, and in Louisiana, two detectives begin the investigation of a ritualistic murder of a girl - Dora Lange. While Cohle is convinced this is the work of a serial killer, Hart has second thoughts and he invites his partner for dinner.

It's Cohle's daughter's (dead) birthday and he turns up drunk at dinner, which is something Hart doesn't like even though he doesn't know the full story. In 2012, Cohle and Hart are interviewed by the police following the discovery of a similar murder that resembles the one in 1995.

The Locked Room (9.2)

In the third episode of season 1, more secrets of this gory tale are revealed. The victim, Dora Lange, is understood to be a frequent visitor of the church and the detectives get a solid lead from there.

Cohle and Hart are pressured to find something in this case or else they won't be handling it. Hart tries to reconnect with his wife Maggie, while Cohle looks for similar murders in the last couple of years. Back in the present, Hart continues his rant, while Cohle gives his negative opinions about the world.

Haunted Houses (9.2)

In the sixth episode of season 1, in 2002, Cohle continues his investigation into Ledoux, despite being warned to stop. Some secrets about Wellspring are revealed before Cohle seeks out Kelly, Ledoux's victim, who survived. He thinks that there was a third man involved in the abduction.

Meanwhile, Maggie finds out Hart is cheating on her again, so in order to get rid of him for good, she becomes intimate with Cohle which results in a fall out between the two detectives. In 2012, the interviews continue. This time, Maggie was asked about her relations with the two men.

After You've Gone (9.2)

In the seventh episode of season 1, Cohle confronts Hart in 2012 as they partner again to find out the truth about what happened way back in 1995. Cohle is able to convince Hart about the presence of a cult that has resulted in the disappearance of women and children.

They continue to unravel mysteries as Ledoux's relatives are sought out. Furthermore, Gilbough and Papania continue their investigation as they try to find the church Cohle told them about. There, they meet the gigantic man with scars on his face.

The Secret Fate Of All Life (9.6)

In the fifth episode of season 1, it's 1995, and Cohle goes undercover in a drug trade as he looks for Ledoux, who is believed to be the killer. Hart and Cohle are involved in a bust that leads to the death of Ledoux.

Both detectives make it look like a shootout and they are hailed back at the station, before being recommended for promotions. In 2002, Cohle is brought in to interrogate a robber who reveals that Ledoux didn't kill those missing girls, instead it was someone else. Back in the present, Cohle and Hart's interviews go on.

Form and Void (9.6)

In the finale of season 1, Cohle and Hart finally found some closure, in a supernatural ending. The killer is revealed to be Eric Childress, whose beliefs are quite odd. Hart and Cohle, somehow, get to know his whereabouts before getting involved in a tense shootout.

Both of them survive as they kill the cult killer, but Cohle gets badly injured in the battle. The episode ends with Hart taking Cohle home in a wheelchair as the two long term partners finally find some rest.

Who Goes There (9.7)

In the fourth episode of season 1 is considered one of the best episodes of the entire series. Cole and Hart continue their investigation into Ledoux as they go to meet his former cellmate. They get to know about a cult involving rich people who were willing to sacrifice women and children for some devil worship.

Furthermore, Cohle lies to the police, in order to go undercover and get closer to Ledoux. Meanwhile, in 2012, Papania and Gilbough don't quite understand Cohle's sick leave, especially after getting such a solid lead in the case. Hart chooses not to answer.
