Good news comes to HBO’s freshman comedy Barry and the network’s long-running tech-industry satire Silicon Valley, as both were handed early renewal notices. That means Bill Hader’s dark hitman comedy will live to see season 2, while the guys at Pied Piper have another year of barely surviving the brutal ups and downs of startup culture with what will be season 6 for that series. That makes Silicon Valley one of HBO’s current longest running comedies, with only Veep out pacing it by a single season.

The news is certainly welcome for anyone who’s tuned into either series this season, as both have earned positive reviews. For its part, Barry has managed to take what is essentially a very dark premise and outlook and still infuse it with the sort of comedy viewers have come to expect from Bill Hader. Meanwhile, in its fifth season, Silicon Valley has demonstrated it’s doing just fine, and given the news of the last few days, probably better off after having parted ways with T.J. Miller when it did.

The news was announced in a statement from the network, with Amy Gravitt, executive vice president, HBO programming having this to say:

“While BARRY has delighted audiences with its deft interplay of comedy and drama, SILICON VALLEY remains as brilliantly and frighteningly prescient as ever. We’re thrilled that these two smart, funny shows are returning for another season.”

Overall, the news is welcome, though not entirely unexpected. Barry was one of the more anticipated new series of the 2018 season, and following the positive critical response it was all but a shoo-in for renewal. Silicon Valley, for its part, has been a consistent winner for the network, and though it’s getting on in years, the comedy doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. As far as how long Silicon Valley will continue running is anyone’s guess, as the news of its renewal made no mention of season 6 being its last. Given the positive response season 5 has received, especially in the wake of Miller’s contentious departure, perhaps the series has more left in the tank than previously thought.

Both Barry and Silicon Valley will continue their respective seasons through the first part of May, at which point we’ll have a better guess as to what they have planned for their second and sixth seasons, respectively.
