One good turn certainly deserves another, as Nicole Kidman is set to reunite with Big Little Lies screenwriter David E. Kelley for another HBO limited series, this one titled The Undoing. Kidman and Kelley’s previous collaboration for the premium channel earned her numerous awards last year, but it also proved a big enough hit that the powers that be at HBO deigned it necessary to order a second season, one that will not only reunite the main cast that also includes Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern, Zoe Kravitz, Shailene Woodley, and Adam Scott, but it will also bring perennial Academy Award nominee Meryl Streep on board as the mother of Alexander Skarsgård’s Perry Wright.

While that will likely be first on the docket, it seems that Kidman and Kelley are set to venture off into another television adaptation of a novel, this time turning You Should Have Known, by Jean Hanff Korelitz, into what will likely be another big event series for HBO. This time, though, Kidman will serve as the primary lead, while Kelley will take on the role of showrunner, in addition to his writing duties. At present there are no other actors attached.

As reported by Variety, The Undoing finds HBO once again looking to create a star-studded limited series to reel in viewers, this time with what is being described as a psychological thriller about marriage counsellor Grace Sachs (Kidman), whose life is turned upside down on the eve of her first book being published. The story also involves the disappearance of Grace’s husband, which in turns leads to a number of discoveries that forever change her life.

The idea of a successful character on the receiving end of a rude awakening, just as she’s about to take her career to the next level, sounds like a solid premise for a leering kind of thriller. After all, who doesn’t like watching when a character’s presumably picture perfect life is revealed to be anything but? For his part, Kelley certainly seems eager to adapt Korelitz’s novel, which he describes as “a character-driven psychological thriller.”

There’s no word yet on when the series might premiere, but it’s a good be it will happen after Big Little Lies season 2 drops next year. Whether that means HBO will premiere two series starring Nicole Kidman in the same year or not remains to be seen, but with the final season of Game of Thrones also airing then, HBO may be set to deliver a powerhouse year in 2019.
