HBO has ordered a pilot for Mrs. Fletcher, a new comedy series starring Kathryn Hahn as a divorced mother with a college-aged son in what is being described as a “dual coming-of-age story.” The new series is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by The Leftovers author Tom Perrotta, who is on board to not only write the pilot episode, but will also serve as an executive producer.

Hahn (Transparent, I Love Dick) will star as Eve Fletcher, a divorcée and director of a senior center who finds that empty nest syndrome isn’t so bad once her son Brendan is finally shipped off to college. In her son’s absence, Eve discovers plenty to occupy her free time and her imagination, as she begins dipping her toe in the dating world once again, and discovering the good and bad of sexuality and romance in the digital age.

As reported by TVLine, HBO has described the series as “a dual coming-of-age story, exploring the impact of Internet porn and social media on our most intimate relationships.” One that revolves around Eve as “she adopts a sexy new persona and discovers that her world is full of unexpected — and sometimes complicated — erotic possibilities.”

This marks the second time Perrotta has been closely involved with an adaptation of his work at HBO. He worked with showrunner Damon Lindelof on the network’s critically acclaimed The Leftovers, which moved past the novel entirely in its final two seasons, suggesting that Perrotta is willing to explore the narrative possibilities television has to offer, while still remaining true to the themes and ideas established in the original text. Considering he’ll be writing the pilot and producing alongside director Nicole Holofcener (Enough Said), it stands to reason those who were fans of Mrs. Fletcher the novel will find plenty to enjoy with a potential series as well.

The casting of Hahn in the lead role is a strong start for the series, and will hopefully serve to attract more talent to the project in the co-starring and supporting roles. Finding the right Brendan will be a priority since the novel actually alternates between his and his mother’s points of view — hence the “dual coming-of-age story.” Provided the show plans to follow that formula, Brendan will ostensibly be the co-lead of the suburban satire. There’s also the role of Amanda, Eve’s tattooed twenty-something co-worker, and Julian, the young man who was bullied by Eve’s son when they were in high school.

Mrs. Fletcher wouldn’t be the first book you would think to turn into a series on HBO, but then again, neither was The Leftovers. If that series proved anything, it was how easily Perrotta’s writing translates to the screen, and how much those adaptations are improved by having him take part in bringing the project to life.
