While HBO is often considered to make the most compelling crime dramas and innovative comedies on TV, so far, the HBO Max exclusives leave a bit to be desired. However, the network will be making some huge moves to ensure anyone who is not subscribed to the streaming service will be missing out.

There are tons of DC series in development, and though they may be released in 2022, it isn't confirmed. And there are other great shows like Love Life and Doom Patrol that will be returning for another season, but these are brand new and original HBO Max exclusives that subscribers can look forward to in 2022. HBO is prepping the release of some of its most exciting crime dramas and comedies yet.

Gremlins

Gremlins Secrets of the Mogwai First Image

It's hilarious that Gremlins is being adapted into a children's cartoon, as the original movie is not remotely suitable for kids. Not only did the Gremlins commit real-life crimes, but they are thrown in blenders and microwaves until they're turned into mush or blown up.

Nevertheless, the animation of the cartoon is so charming and it looks like it will build the lore of the world too. The series is a prequel to the two movies, as it's set in Shanghai in the 1920s and follows Sam Wing as he meets Gizmo. But young audiences who get into this will be startled when they're grown up enough to watch the '80s classic.

Peacemaker

Peacemaker looks confused in Peacemaker

HBO Max is promoting Peacemaker like they've never promoted anything before, and in terms of exclusive shows, the DCEU series has the potential to pull in more subscribers than any other. Peacemaker is John Cena's best 2021 character, and he was arguably the best character in The Suicide Squad too, as Cena wasn't afraid to make a fool of himself and he had some of the best one-liners in a movie filled with them.

Now, with his own TV show, fans will be treated to approximately eight hours of completely unfiltered Peacemaker, as he attempts to keep the peace by killing dozens of people. It also has The Suicide Squad director, James Gunn, at the helm of most of the episodes too, which means that unique humor will remain intact.

Love And Death

Love and Death will hardly have any comic relief, as the series surrounds the brutal ax murder of Candy Montgomery in the 1980s. It's based on a true story and all the characters are based on real-life people who lived in Texas. The show is based on the non-fiction book, Evidence of Love: A True Story of Passion and Death in the Suburbs.

The new HBO show will star not just Elisabeth Olsen but Jesse Plemons too, who could very well be the best TV actor working today, as his credits include Breaking BadFargo, and Black Mirror. Plemons being cast in the show is a great signifier that Love and Death could be great, as the actor is clearly very selective over the prestigious shows he stars in.

Full Circle

Steven Soderbergh operates camera

Director Steven Soderbergh has a great working relationship with HBO Max. The workaholic directed not just one but two films for the platform, Let Them All Talk and No Sudden Move, which are two of the best HBO Max exclusive movies. And his hectic work ethic and partnership with the streamer will continue in 2022.

The director is prepping the release of another movie, KIMI, and an original series, Full Circle. The exclusive show sees Soderbergh doing two things he does best, crime thrillers and multi-stranded narratives. Full Circle is about a botched kidnapping in New York, which connects multiple characters in strange ways.

Staircase

Colin Firth in Kingsman The Secret Service

Though it might not sound like anything interesting, Staircase is an eerily foreboding title. The show is yet another true-crime series from HBO, as it follows a man who was convicted of murder when his wife was found at the bottom of the staircase in their home.

Just as TV has been becoming the platform for A-list actors to show off their acting range for a while now, HBO has scooped up some Hollywood royalty. Toni Collette and Academy Award winner Colin Firth are starring in the crime drama.

Minx

Nick Miller looking confused in New Girl

The upcoming comedy Minx has a fascinating concept, as it follows a young feminist in the '70s who creates the world's first women's erotic publication. In a strange way, Minx almost sounds like Anchorman, as the comedy is all about a news station in the '70s dominated by men, only for them to be completely thrown off when a female employee is hired.

Not only is the concept interesting, but one of the most talented comedy filmmakers is producing the show too. Paul Feig, director of Bridesmaids and The Heat, is overseeing production. And though the cast is largely unknown, Jake Johnson is in a main role.

Our Flag Means Death

Split image of Taika Waititi and a picture of Blackbeard

Jack of all trades Taika Waititi is one of the best comic book directors, but he's also just as brilliant in front of the screen too. Between playing a vampire in the mockumentary What We Do In The Shadows, playing Korg in the MCU, and being the antagonist in Free Guy, Waititi already has so many iconic characters under his belt. But in 2022, he could see his best role yet in Our Flag Means Death.

The actor will take out his plastic fangs and put on his eye patch, as he'll be playing the famous pirate Blackbeard in Our Flag Means Death. The show is a pirate-based comedy, and it'll focus on Stede Bonnet, a real-life aristocrat who abandoned his life to become a pirate. It seems like 2022 could be the year of pirates. Not only will viewers get Our Flag Means Death, but the upcoming Uncharted is about pirate history, and the heavily talked-about Pirates of the Caribbean reboot could surface.

DMZ

Rosario Dawson as Bridget Meyer in Dopesick

Rosario Dawson is going to have a huge year on streamers in 2022, and she has the potential to have the best show on both Disney+ and HBO Max. Not only will Dawson star in the Star Wars series Ashoka, but she'll lead DMZ too.

Though HBO Max will have all the exclusive DC shows, DMZ is based on a comic book that isn't tied to any universe. The show follows a medic in the middle of a second American Civil War in a dystopian Manhattan Island. It's a fascinating premise, and there's a possibility that it could turn into a huge, long-running series.

Dune: The Sisterhood

Warner Bros. is creating an interesting pattern, as the studio is creating TV spin-off series of some of their acclaimed movies. It's happening first with Peacemaker, The Batman is getting two spin-off shows focusing on the Penguin and the GCPD, and now, the sci-fi hit Dune is getting one too.

The Sisterhood will follow a mysterious order of women who have unique abilities over the body and mind. And as the novel is so steeped in lore that's impossible to detail in one film, the show can help take some weight off the movie series' shoulders. Though the 1980s Dune is one of the strangest novel-to-movie adaptations, the newest adaptation is a fascinatingly detailed and coherent visual masterpiece, and that will hopefully translate to the small screen too.

Tokyo Vice

Tony looks behind him in the gym dance in West Side Story

Between The SopranosThe Wire, and True Detective, crime dramas are HBO's bread and butter and they're the gold standard of the genre. And as those three shows are at legendary status, Tokyo Vice could be the show to carry the torch.

The crime show has a period setting too, as it's set in the late '90s and follows an American journalist who reports on the corruption in the Vice squad. For anyone who is well-versed in the subject matter, they'll know that the show has the potential to be one of the grittiest HBO dramas yet.
