The weather might be getting nicer, but HBO Max is giving subscribers a reason to stay indoors with the batch of new movies and TV shows coming in May 2021. Though May is traditionally the start of summer blockbuster season, the lingering effects of the pandemic continue to convince consumers to pick streaming over theaters. Thankfully, the WarnerMedia service keeps churning out notable titles, and the month of May will be no different. In addition to new Max Originals and a few movie debuts, HBO Max is set to welcome back a major DCEU installment.
Despite saying goodbye to Godzilla vs. Kong at the end of the month, HBO Max's April releases filled the void with the simultaneous premiere of Mortal Kombat. The big-budget film was simultaneously released alongside a theater run as part of WB's deal with the streamer. The service also drew interest throughout the month with the inclusions of new TV shows like The Nevers, Made for Love, and Mare of Easttown.
With Mortal Kombat's late April release, the title will continue to be available to HBO Max subscribers for much of the month. Those looking to watch the 1995 film that launched the live-action movie franchise will be happy to know the title arrives on May 1. The first of April will also feature the debut of Christopher Nolan's Tenet, which is coming to HBO as a Saturday night premiere. Greenland (May 8) and The Personal History Of David Copperfield (May 15) will serve as fellow weekend premieres. Between those dates, HBO Max will reunite with Wonder Woman 1984 (May 13) while also debuting the WB title, Those Who Wish Me Dead (May 14), starring Angelina Jolie. As for Max Originals, That Damn Michael Che, a sketch show from the SNL cast member, begins on May 6, while a new dark comedy called Hacks starts on May 13. A week later (May 20), Adventure Time: Distant Lands - Together Again hits the streamer.

As mentioned, Mortal Kombat will be leaving at the end of the month, specifically May 23, to follow in line with WB's deal with HBO Max. On the final day of May, the 1995 title of the same name and the sequel, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, will also be heading out. That day will also feature the exits of a handful of notable franchise titles, including the original Scream trilogy, the first two Jaws films, and the two recent X-Men films, First Class and Dark Phoenix. Granted, there are plenty of incoming movies and TV shows to fill the void left by the departures.
