A couple of new trailers have been released for two awesome-looking HBO series', Martin Scorsese and Terence Winter's Boardwalk Empire and the period fantasy series, Game of Thrones. You can watch both of the trailers out below.
If the name doesn't mean much to you, then the talent involved will definitely catch your interest. Aside from the series (well, at least the pilot) being directed by the legendary Martin Scorsese, it's also co-created and written by Terence Winter, who was one of the writers on another little HBO show called The Sopranos (you may have heard of it).
Boardwalk Empire sports an incredible cast which includes Steve Buscemi, Michael Shannon (The Runaways), Kelly Macdonald (No Country for Old Men), Michael Pitt (Funny Games), Gretchen Mol (Life on Mars), Michael Stuhlbarg (A Serious Man) and many more. Here's the synopsis for the show:
The story centers on Nucky Johnson (Buscemi), a cunning businessman who runs a liquor distribution ring at the onset of Prohibition, and Jimmy Darmody (Pitt), a young, highly intelligent and ruthless WWI veteran, a low-level flunky for Nucky who wants to quickly climb the ladder.
If all that isn't enough to get you interested (although I don't see why it wouldn't be), check out the new trailer for Boardwalk Empire below:
There's just so much about Boardwalk Empire that has me eagerly anticipating the first episode - from the famous director, writer and cast members to the overall look and feel of it. HBO is still one of the best networks on TV, but let's face it, they don't have shows as good as The Sopranos, The Wire and Six Feet Under on air anymore (that's not knocking amazing shows like Curb Your Enthusiasm and True Blood, mind you).
I'll definitely be watching when Boardwalk Empire premieres on HBO this fall.
If Boardwalk Empire wasn't up your alley, here's something that may be. Game of Thrones is an upcoming series based on the books by George R.R. Martin and starring the likes of Sean Bean, Lena Heady (300), Peter Dinklage, Iain Glen and Harry Lloyd. We learned back in March that HBO had picked up the series for 9 episodes (so far) and supposedly there could be as many as four seasons, with each season based on a different book in the series. That would be a very cool way to handle the adaptation, in my opinion.
In case you're wondering, the synopsis for Game of Thrones is as follows:
The sprawling tale set in the mythical land of Westeros tells the story of the noble Stark family who become caught up in high court intrigue when patriarch Eddard (played by Sean Bean) becomes the king’s new right-hand man.
It seems as though HBO isn't quick to forget The Sopranos; along with Terence Winter co-creating and writing Boardwalk Empire, Game of Thrones is being described as "The Sopranos with swords, due to its brutal realism."
The series had me at Sean Bean :-) .
Check out the quick teaser for Game of Thrones below. It's not much, but certainly gives us a feel of what the series has in store:
BONUS: On top of the new promo, THR also has an impressive new image for the show featuring Sean Bean's Eddard Stark. Take a look (click for larger version):
Game of Thrones will go into production next month and will likely premiere on HBO in the Spring or Summer of 2011.
Which of these two HBO shows are you looking forward to most and why? Personally I'm leaning towards Boardwalk Empire, simply because of the people involved.
