While no premiere date has been confirmed yet for the second season of HBO science fiction comedy Avenue 5, the series has been confirmed for a second season.

The show follows a unique premise: set in the future, people no longer vacation on cruise ships on the water but in interplanetary cruise ships that travel through the universe. Run by a clueless billionaire (played by the hilarious Josh Gad) it also turns out that the captain of the ship (played by Hugh Laurie) is just a useless face – he has no actual knowledge on how to run a cruise ship.

When a tragic accident leads to the ship going off course, the passengers realize that they might be stuck on board for years, not days. Season one ends with a cliff-hanger as the passengers learn that the new trajectory means the time they'll be stuck in space has increased from 3.5 to eight years. A lot can happen in season two but what do fans want to see?

The Journey's Length Shortens

Hugh Laurie, Josh Gad, and Suzy Nakamura in Avenue 5 HBO

The most obvious need for the second season is for the crew and passengers to hatch a plan to shorten the length of the journey and get back to earth. That said, for the sake of the show, the longer they remain the air, the more seasons the series can have, of course.

Even so, the second season at least needs to show everyone working together to find a way to adjust course and get home from space more quickly than the current situation suggests – even if another setback happens.

Billie Takes Over Leading The Ship

Avenue 5 Billie

It's clear from the get-go that Billie is one of only a handful of people working on the ship who actually knows what she's talking about. While Captain Ryan (the talented Hugh Laurie) is a great face for the brand and the type who can command an audience (sort of), Billie is the actual brains behind the operation.

There needs to be a shift whereby she gives the orders and people actually listen to her.

Find Out What Happens To Iris

Iris Avenue 5

The season ended with Iris aboard a supply ship, trying to get Jordan off so Judd could get on and escape to safety. But the doors close once the countdown ends and Iris is sent away in his place by mistake.

Iris is Judd's right-hand woman so it's unclear how she will manage without having him to watch over and, more importantly, how Judd will behave without having Iris there by his side. If Iris lands safely on Earth, having her communicate from there would make for an interesting dynamic. Or will she somehow end up back on the ship?

Matt Dealing With His Guilt

Matt Avenue 5

One of the best characters on the show, Matt – played by Zach Woods who is best known for his role as Jared on the HBO series Silicon Valley - was always a ray of sunshine, speaking in a thoughtful tone even when delivering bad news. That is, until things went terribly wrong and him handing over codes led to seven people accidentally getting killed.

In the final episode, he hid away on the ship trying to avoid causing any more problems and to deal with his guilt. Season two needs to see the return of the old Matt.

Karen Is Knocked Down A Few Pegs

Avenue 5 Karen

Karen has been walking around like she owns the place. Thanks to her ability to rally the troops, the cruise's crew has enlisted her help as a liaison. However, she continues to make bad decisions.

The biggest blunder was in accidentally launching the supply ship with tons of excess weight through the rear of the ship instead of the portside airlocks, thus failing to propel the ship forward. Instead of adjusting their time to get home from 3.5 years to six months, she increased it to eight years. In season two, Karen needs to be knocked down a few pegs and her husband Frank needs to start speaking up for himself.

Ryan Actually Learns More About Captaining Avenue 5

Avenue 5 Ryan

Captain Ryan seems like a handsome, charming, knowledgeable ship captain. But it's revealed that he actually isn't a captain at all, just a man hired to make the experience look authentic. In season one, while in dire circumstances, he was at least making an effort to learn how to run the ship.

Season two should see Captain Ryan work even harder to learn how to do the job he is pretending to hold, which is captaining a ship. He doesn't have anything else to do, after all.

Judd Becomes More Relatable

Herman Judd Avenue 5

While Josh Gad is a wonderful actor who is able to tackle many kinds of roles, mostly comedic ones. But his role as a spoiled, bratty, selfish billionaire on this show isn't his best. Judd is totally unlikeable and so overly exaggerated that it's often too much.

A more relatable Judd needs to surface for season two that provides more detail into his backstory, including how he became so rich in the first place and why he is the way he is.

Doug And Mia Get Back Together

Avenue 5 Doug Mia

Through the entire series, unhappily married couple Doug and Mia have been at one another's throats. It seems they decided to go on the cruise together in hopes of repairing their fractured relationship. But instead, it just made them despise each other even more.

As Doug stomps around angrily, sounding off to anyone who will listen and Mia flirts her way into the arms of a young foreign ship employee, they seem destined for a breakup. But in one fleeting moment, there's hope as Doug grabs Mia's hands and tries to save them together on the supply ship. Season two could look at them using their time in space to actually make things work.

Jordan Gets A Bigger Role

Avenue 5 Jordan

Jordan – played by Yesterday's Himesh Patel - is an interesting character who didn’t get a ton of screen time but there's potential. A terrible comedian, he has tried desperately to entertain guests but his jokes fall flat – he isn't funny. He could provide some much-needed comic relief for the passengers but lacks the talent.

Now that he's stuck on the supply ship with Iris, is there a chance that he plays a bigger role? Is there romance brewing between he and Iris or, more likely, Billie? Whatever the case, there needs to be more Jordan in season two.

Spike Martin Does Something, Anything, To Help

Avenue 5 Spike

There has to be something from passenger Spike Martin in season two. A former astronaut who is no stranger to space exploration, he arguably has more knowledge than anyone else on board though no one seems to look to him for it. Sure, he might not know the ins and outs of the high-tech spacecraft. But he does know space, in general.

Season two needs to see him slow down on the drinking and womanizing and actually play a bigger role in trying to help the situation.
