Hayley Atwell is open to reprising her role as Peggy Carter moving forward, and even wants to star in her own movie. Atwell has been a staple in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since Phase 1 and has even played a major role in Captain America's arc in the modern day. Much of that could be attributed to her instantly becoming a fan-favorite in Captain America: The First Avenger, but the 1940s setting resulted in her having diminished roles in the films moving forward.

Thanks to the love audiences have for her character, Atwell went on to star in her very own Marvel One-Shot, as well as a prelude series Agent Carter - that was abruptly canceled after two seasons. Because of the unfulfilling ending to Agent Carter, fans have been eager to see what else she has been up to. Her funeral scene in Captain America: Civil War appeared to signal the end to her big screen appearances, but Atwell is hoping to make a big return.

IGN spoke to Atwell about the possibility of Peggy making a return to the Marvel films. Even after racking up four film appearances, a One-Shot, two seasons of her series, and a few cameos on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Atwell is not interested in having her Marvel role come to an end. She is very much open to returning in future films, but would also love to see Peggy lead her own film.

I'd love to see [Peggy] more in films. I'd love to see her in her own film. And if we can keep evolving it so that she does new things so that I can surprise myself and she can keep surprising me then I'd love to do it. And I feel very privileged to be part of something that people really love and that entertains them. But also, you're going to these conventions and meeting people who've named their son Carter and people who have a tattoo of "I Know My Value," the tagline. She's a force of good and there are a lot of social media sites where girls and guys have come together and become good friends on an international scale because of their belief in some of the values that Peggy talks about. And that provides them with a different connection that a family situation or school situation that they don't really feel they have a place in. That's really cool to me. So I'm very happy to be a part of that world and keep that going.

Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter in Ant-Man

While there has yet to be any official word on the possibility of Peggy Carter leading her own film, there would surely not be a lack of interest. Marvel Studios is just starting work on their first female-led film, and with audiences proving that they'll come out in support of these movies - like they have with Wonder Woman - maybe this would be something for Marvel to consider in the near future. It would have to be a period piece of course, but fans of her and this universe would love to see even more history built in. Plus, if it could resolve any of the cliffhangers from Agent Carter, that would be a bonus.

Even if Peggy doesn't one day have her own solo film, there is considerable interest from fans and now from Atwell as well to have her pop up in other projects. With Captain Marvel announced to be taking place in the 1990s, an older Peggy could absolutely be involved. Not only would it be great to see possibly Marvel's greatest female characters reappear, but having her share the screen with their first leading lady - played by Brie Larson - would allow things to come full circle. Whether it is a solo film or more appearances, all fans can do for now is hope Atwell gets her wish either way.
