It's fair to say that Marvel Studios' 2011 effort Captain America: The First Avenger contained quite a few memorable supporting characters, but arguably the most beloved was Agent Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell). Just as tough and capable on the job as she was beautiful and charming off the clock, Atwell's Carter made a huge impression on viewers, all the while she was stealing Steve Rogers' heart on-screen. Of course, the fact that The First Avenger was a prequel film to the present day Avengers saga made further substantial appearances from Carter - at least the young version - in subsequent MCU films near impossible.

Thankfully for fans of the Peggy Carter character, ABC and Marvel decided to give Atwell her own star vehicle on TV, in the form of the simply titled Agent Carter. Airing during the midseason breaks of fellow ABC/Marvel project Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Agent Carter was widely praised by critics, and won over a loyal cult of fans. Unfortunately, this cult didn't translate into high ratings, with season 1 averaging a respectable enough - if far from impressive for ABC - 1.5 in the 18-49 demographic. The series received a second season, but the numbers only fell further, ultimately averaging a 0.8 among the same group.

Naturally, this led ABC to cancel Agent Carter after 2 short seasons, but that hasn't stopped fans from hoping against hope that Atwell's journey as Carter would one day continue. For her part, Atwell has expressed a desire to return to the role on multiple occasions since Agent Carter's cancellation. Well, it turns out that she's going to get her wish, just not how one might expect. As revealed during today's Marvel Animation Panel at NYCC, Atwell has signed on to voice Peggy Carter in the Disney XD animated series Marvel's Avengers: Secret Wars.

Agent Carter

For those unfamiliar, Marvel's Avengers: Secret Wars was originally launched under the name Avengers Assemble back in 2013, and served as a successor series to prior cartoon The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes! Starting with 2016's season 3, Avengers Assemble was renamed Marvel's Avengers: Ultron Revolution, and season 4 will air under the Marvel's Avengers: Secret Wars title.

In addition to Peggy Carter, the Secret Wars season is expected to introduce other prominent Marvel heroes like Black Panther and Ant-Man into the mix. As for when the season will air, no information has yet been made available, although one assumes a 2017 premiere is likely. While Agent Carter devotees will no doubt go on pining for the series to get a proper season 3, at least Atwell will get to reprise what has become her signature role, albeit only in vocal form. It might not be exactly what fans want, but it's certainly better than nothing.

Marvel's Avengers: Secret Wars will air on Disney XD, but has no set premiere date yet.
