What It Would Take For Hayley Atwell to Play Peggy Carter Again

Hayley Atwell remains open to playing Peggy Carter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe again, so long as it feels like an "appropriate development". The Agent Carter star also says it would have to be "something a lot more" than what she's already done bringing the S.H.I.E.L.D.-founding character to life on the big and small screen.

Atwell's MCU counterpart was quick to become a fan-favorite after her appearance in 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger, but that popularity didn't translate into huge ratings when the character got her own spinoff TV series on ABC. Nevertheless, Agent Carter's loyal fanbase has been pushing for its revival ever since the network cancelled it back in 2016, after eighteen episodes and two seasons. At the same time, Atwell has since made it clear that she would be game to revive the 1940s action/adventure serial and/or reprise the titular character in some other fashion.

However, Atwell has also maintained that, as much as she loves the Peggy Carter character, she doesn't want to bring Agent Carter back from the dead just for the sake of it. She expressed a similar sentiment during the roundtable interviews at the Christopher Robin press junket (which Screen Rant attended) and offered the following answer, when asked if she missed playing Peggy:

Do I miss it? Well, I'm slightly divided because as an actor you give what you can, you do your job to everything and every character you play and some are going to have more impacts than others and this within the Marvel world has had lasting impact because the nature of the franchise being a very expansive and ongoing thing, and that's really wonderful, and I've met a lot of fans of the show and to be the kind of custodian for that period of time for Peggy Carter is lovely. If there's going to be one character that follows me around out of all the characters I've played she's the one that is the most palatable, kind of meat of everyday life to be associated with. But I think I wouldn't want to kind of... if I had the opportunity again to play her then it would have to feel that it was an appropriate development and something a lot more than I've already done.

Agent Carter season 2 ended on a cliffhanger that not only saw Peggy and her fellow SSR agent Daniel Sousa (Enver Gjokaj) hook up romantically, but also had Agent Jack Thompson (Chad Michael Murray) seemingly killed by a mysterious shooter, who then proceeded to steal a heavily redacted - and supposedly incriminating - file on Peggy. It would certainly be nice for fans of the series to get some closure to both of those story threads, rather than be left hanging and forever wondering what came after. On top of that, the show was dropped before it got a chance to really fulfill its original promise of revealing how Peggy and her peers (Daniel, in particular) got S.H.I.E.L.D. started in the first place.

Finally bridging the gap between the MCU pre and post-S.H.I.E.L.D. would be "something a lot more" than Atwell has done in the franchise already, and thus meet her qualifications for reprising Peggy. At the same time, Peggy's story did get a definite ending in the trilogy capper Captain America: Civil War (namely, her death) and there's not a lot of incentive for Marvel to revisit the character beyond fan petitioning, at this stage. Either way you cut it, if Peggy Carter ever does ride again, it clearly won't happen on a whim.
