Disney+'s upcoming Hawkeye series will dive deep into Clint Barton's backstory. Announced at Marvel Studios' Hall H panel at this year's San Diego Comic-Con, the upcoming project is part of the company's extensive Phase 4 plans, which now include small screen offerings on top of their usual movie releases. Jeremy Renner was confirmed to reprise his role as one of the original Avengers, but rumors lately are claiming that the actor may not appear, with a recast in the horizon.

Marvel Studios is mum about the ongoing speculations that Renner is on his way out as the MCU's resident marksman. However, regardless how that situation pans out, it seems like the narrative for Hawkeye is all set. While specific plot details are still tightly under wraps, longtime producer Trinh Tran shares some information about what fans can expect from the upcoming Disney+ show.

In a recent interview with Screen Rant, Tran talks about her involvement with Hawkeye, saying that she specifics chose to work on that said project because she wants to be part of the team that tells Barton's past. Aside from the main character, the producer is also excited to introduce Kate Bishop in the MCU (which Hailee Steinfeld is in the running for), and it seems like they will mine inspiration from Matt Fraction's comic book run.

SR: You're not done with the MCU. You're doing the Disney + project, Hawkeye. How excited are you to explore Clint more?

Trinh Tran: Well, I chose that one specifically because we haven't gotten a chance to tell Clint Barton's story. You've seen Thor have several movies. You know his backstory. Cap has several movies, Tony has a few, so they've all had their chance, and Clint Barton hasn't gotten a chance to tell his past. I'm excited for that, and I'm also excited that there is a young girl coming in who wants to be Hawkeye.

SR: I'm a huge Kate Bishop fan.

Trinh Tran: Are you really? [Matt] Fraction's run is absolutely one of the most amazing things. I remember sitting there are reading through the Fraction run and going, this is amazing. This is absolutely amazing. This is something we can do. We can do this! So wanting to tell Clint's backstory, after reading Fraction's run and getting excited for Kate Bishop there's something really interesting that I think the two of them can have.

In the comics, Bishop is the daughter of a businessman who has dirty dealings on the side. After getting assaulted at Central Park, she took it upon herself to ensure that she'll never be vulnerable again. She trained in martial arts, and eventually assumed the name of Hawkeye when Barton was presumed dead. The two co-starred in Fraction and David Aja's Hawkeye comic book run. It's uncertain how exactly Marvel Studios will tackle incorporate some of the pair's adventure in print to the Hawkeye series - if they'll do any of that, but it will be interesting to see how it will all fit in the existing MCU lore.

As for Barton, it seems like the Disney+ series Hawkeye will double as his standalone adventure, which is in light of what Marvel Studios is doing with Scarlett Johansson's long-delayed Black Widow solo movie. Depending on how they're doing the series, the company may be able to deal with the current calls for a Renner recast without totally booting off the actor out from the role. If the show will deal with Barton's backstory, they can bring in a younger actor to play the role, effectively minimizing Renner's actual appearance.
