Warning: SPOILERS for Hawkeye episode 1.

"Thanos was right" graffiti showed up in a scene from the Hawkeye premiere, and it may have been a subtle Captain America insult. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Hawkeye, Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) wants to spend the holidays in New York with his family. Unfortunately, Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) gets involved, and things go awry. After Bishop dons Hawkeye's old Ronin outfit while fighting off criminals at a black-market auction, she makes enemies with the wrong people. So now, Hawkeye needs to face his past as Ronin, ensure Bishop's safety, and make it home in time for the holidays.

Before Bishop upends Hawkeye's plans, he takes his kids to see Rogers: The Musical. The show, which was inspired by Chris Evans' Captain America, features actors singing and dancing their way through the history of the Avengers' adventures. However, Hawkeye is unimpressed and even turns his hearing aid off during the show, much to the chagrin of his daughter. Though he's not a fan, seeing an actor portraying Scarlett Johansson's Natasha Romanoff on stage strikes a chord with Hawkeye. He also spots a kid in the audience doing her best Black Widow impression. Eventually, Hawkeye leaves the show and heads out of the theater, where his kids soon join him.

While still at the theater, Hawkeye notices an odd message about Thanos (Josh Brolin), and there may be a reason it's there. Hawkeye heads to the restroom before exiting the venue and notices some choice graffiti on the urinal. The message reads, "Thanos was right." Hawkeye, who helped in the fight against the Mad Titan, is indifferent to the graffiti. "Hmm," is all he musters as a response. However, there may be a simple reason it's there, and it doesn't have anything to do with Thanos being right in the MCU. Instead, it may be more about the Captain America play. It seems someone didn't enjoy Rogers: The Musical, and the bathroom graffiti is how they chose to air their grievances.

Hawkeye Rogers the Musical Avengers Broadway

Several signs point to the graffiti coming from an amateur theater critic rather than a true Thanos sympathizer. For instance, the message isn't on the street or in the New York subway. It's in the bathroom at the theater where Rogers: The Musical takes place. That means the scribbling is probably coming from someone who has a ticket and watched the show. Hawkeye and his family didn't enjoy the performance, so, likely, others didn't appreciate it as well. However, while Hawkeye and his kids simply left the theater, it's possible someone chose to voice their displeasure in the best place available to them: a urinal in the men's bathroom. After all, if Thanos' plan had worked, this particular person wouldn't have to sit through multiple hours of Captain America singing.

If the graffiti indeed came from someone siding with Thanos, it'd be even weirder. No doubt bringing people back in Avengers: Endgame caused unrest. After all, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier shows several problems springing up after half the population suddenly came back to life. Resources became strained, and people were left homeless. In real life, fans and critics even debated the merits of Thanos' message about resources. However, a group of people heading to Rogers: The Musical isn't exactly a pro-Thanos crowd. It's possible the person could've bought a ticket and put the message on the urinal to troll people. However, it's more likely that this particular theater goer heard the cast of the play singing, "I can do this all day," and genuinely wished they wouldn't.
