Marvel Studios is in the early stages of developing a Hawkeye spinoff TV show for the show's deaf hero Echo. Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is fully embracing the possibilities of the small screen. After a decade of dominating the box office, the MCU expands its content to Disney's streaming service. WandaVision and The Falcon and The Winter Soldier are only the beginning of this initiative, as Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye is getting a show of his own.

Hawkeye will be the first chance for Marvel's sharpshooter to get a solo project, but the series also sets up a big part of the MCU's future. Hailee Steinfeld is co-starring as Kate Bishop, the fan-favorite character from the comics who will become the next Hawkeye. The story will introduce characters tied to their pasts and futures, including a Native American deaf assassin named Maya Lopez. Newcomer Alaqua Cox plays Echo in Hawkeye, but she is now potentially set to get a solo project.

According to a new report from Variety, Marvel Studios is developing a Disney+ series for Alaqua Cox's Echo. It will be a Hawkeye spinoff show and is in the early stages of development right now. Etan Cohen and his wife Emily Cohen will write the series and serve as executive producers. Marvel is also assembling a writers’ room to work on the untitled Hawkeye spinoff. No release date has been revealed at this time.

Echo takes on the Kingpin in Marvel comics

Echo has yet to make her MCU debut, but Marvel Studios has big plans for her after Hawkeye. This should be an excellent sign for the many fans of Maya Lopez from the comics that Marvel is a fan of Alaqua Cox's role. She'll headline the first Disney+ spinoff show from another series and the first MCU property with a Native American lead, as well as the first where the main character has a disability. With Cox already cast in the role for Hawkeye, the series could move through development rather quickly if writers are already attached.

There might not be any story details revealed for Echo's Hawkeye spinoff show yet, but the character's comic adventures give the series plenty of potential. Maya Lopez is raised by Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin, to be a deadly killer and was taught to believe that Daredevil killed her father. This series could be Marvel Studios' chance to bring Vincent D'Onofrio back as Kingpin after his stellar performances on the Netflix shows. Echo is also the original Ronin in the comics, but the MCU can change her story to allow her to take on the mantle after Barton. Fans will have a better idea of what Echo's standalone show will be about after Hawkeye debuts on Disney+ in late 2021.
